Brown Holds 36-Hole Lead At Rutherford Invitational, Team Second Overall

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Evan Brown was 4-under on the back nine and 6-under overall in the second round to take the 36-hole lead at Penn State University's Rutherford Intercollegiate.

Brandon Berry led the tournament after the first round and is now tied for fifth overall at 2-under, helping the Greyhounds to second after the first two rounds on the Penn State Blue Course, a 7,202-yard, par-71 track.

As a team, the Greyhounds were fifth after 18 holes in the morning, but as overall scores rose for the second 18, Loyola was the one team that had an under-par round to move up three spots with a 3-under 281.

Kent State, the No. 38 ranked team in the nation, leads the tournament at 1-over, four shots ahead of the Greyhounds who are two in front of host Penn State.

Brown was tied for 13th after an even-par 71 in the first round, and he slid back a stroke to 1-over with a bogey on the par-4 third hole. That would be the only blemish on his scorecard for the round as he birdied seven of the next 15 holes to finish post his best competitive round of 2021.

Berry made the turn to the back nine at 1-under, 5-under for the tournament, and leading the event. He then parred six-straight holes and was a shot up on Brown as the Greyhounds' pair were first and second, respectively.  A bogey on the 16th and then double bogey on the 17th, however, set him back to a tie for 2-over in the second round, 2-under for the tournament.

Brett Inserra is tied for 36th overall at 6-over, finishing the day strong with 14 pars to complete an even-par round. Carlo Pizzano eagled the 575-yard, par-5 fifth hole and was even for the second round before a bogey on the next hole dropped him to 1-over. He got back to level with a birdie at the 12th before a bogey on the 18th finished his round at 1-over to check in at 7-over and tied for 43rd overall.

Mike McCarthy had his best round of the day Saturday afternoon, shooting 2-over 73 to get to 9-over and 54th overall.

Play wraps up Sunday with the final 18 holes. Loyola will tee off will players from Kent State and Penn State, starting at 9:30 a.m.
