BALTIMORE –
Tyler Mast closed out a three-set singles win on Monday, giving the Loyola University Maryland men's tennis team a 4-3 win over visiting Rider University at the McClure Tennis Center.
The Loyola women's team also beat the Broncs, 5-2.
Loyola trailed Rider, 3-0, in the men's match after losing the doubles point and the No. 1 and 2 singles flights.
Matt Cardano delivered a 6-0, 6-2 win over Peter Komosinski at No. 3, and
Oliver Davey got the Greyhounds within a point as he beat Jaime de Jaraiz Garcia, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4.
Nick Haggar evened the team score at 3-3 with a 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory over Benjhamin Tauber at No. 5 before Mast outlasted Marcus Frederickson for a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win at No. 6.
The Broncs took two of the three doubles matches with
Edik Pribitkin and
Charlie Shanker winning for Loyola at No. 1, 6-2, over Pablo Saral Carrera and de Jaraiz Garcia.
In the women's match, Loyola swept the doubles matches to earn the early advantage.
Kateri Martin and
Abigail Thornton beat Cyd Melendez and Leila Koster, 6-1, at No. 1, and
Olivia Tracey and
Anna Rico topped Amanda Binder and Ally Garofoli, 6-2, at No. 2.
Abby Decker and
Brooke Santoriello completed the doubles sweep with a 6-4 decision over Sarah Cheverie and Angelica Garcia.
Martin opened singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 over Melendez, and Thornton beat Garcia, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2.
Koster was a three-set winner over Tracey, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3, but Rico scored for the Greyhounds, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4. Decker used a super-tiebreaker in the third to beat Binder, 6-7 (5), 6-3, (10-4) at No. 5, and
Julia Thompson fell, 6-4, 6-4, to Garofoli at No. 6.
Loyola will return to play on Wednesday when it travels to Mount St. Mary's University.
