Brandon Berry shot 69-70 on Saturday to take the individual lead, and Loyola University Maryland has a nine-shot lead in the team race, after the first two rounds of the Patriot League Championships at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course.
Berry leads the individual leaderboard by four strokes with teammate
Evan Brown and Lafayette College's Brendan Cronin tied for second at 3-over 143.
Carlo Pizzano shot 2-over 72 in the second round to move up three spots into a tie for seventh at 7-over for the tournament, and
Brett Inserra's 4-over 74 on Saturday afternoon moved him up five to a tie for 13
th at 11-over.
Nick Mejia used the strength of a 3-over 73 in the first round to tie for 15
th after 36 holes, and
Trent Geritz is tied for 20
th at 15-over.
Loyola started the morning round on the back nine, and Berry posted 10-straight pars to begin the tournament. He was then back at even after a bogey on the second hole – his 11
th – a birdie on the next and then two more pars.
On the 355-yard, par-4 sixth hole, Berry drove the green with a 3-wood, stopping the ball two feet from the hole where he tapped in a put for an eagle. He followed that with two-straight pars before a bogey on the ninth hole brought him back to 1-under for the round.
He opened his second round with a double bogey on the first hole, but he birdied the third, fifth and sixth holes – wrapped around a bogey on the fourth – to sit level for the round. He put up equal parts of three birdies and bogeys on the back nine to finish even for the second 18.
Berry was the only player with two rounds of par or better Saturday with only one other round of 70 posted by a player.
Loyola will start its third and final round at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
