KINGSTON SPRINGS, Tenn. – Loyola University Maryland senior
Evan Brown tied for eighth at the NCAA Kingston Springs Regional, the best finish ever for a Greyhounds golfer in NCAA competition, wrapping up his tournament at 4-under 209.
Brown shot 67 in his first round on Monday before turning in a pair of even-par 71s in the final two rounds. His 4-under score left him one stroke shy of a playoff to advance as an individual to the NCAA Championships.
As a team, the Greyhounds finished 11
th, the best finish at a NCAA Regional in program history and the top finish for a Patriot League team. Both feats bettered Loyola's 12
th-place finish at the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional in 2015.
Brown and the Greyhounds teed off from The Golf Club of Tennessee's back-nine, and he rolled in birdie putts on three of the first four holes before a triple-bogey six on the 14
th hole brought him back to even for the round.
He then birdied the 15
th hole and had pars on the final three of the back nine, his front. He slipped to 1-over for Wednesday after a double bogeying the par-4 first hole, his ninth, before he birdied the third hole to pull level.
Brown wrapped up his tournament with six-straight pars to finish the round at 71 for the second day in a row. He was in line for a playoff spot to advance to the NCAA Championships as an individual before Michigan State's James Piot birdied the 17
th hole to get to 5-under for the tournament.
Brown entered the tournament ranked No. 92 nationally by Golfstat, and he beat nine golfers ranked in the top-100 and two in the top-15.
Brandon Berry, the 2021 Patriot League Champion, was Loyola's No. 2 finisher, tying for 60
th.
Carlo Pizzano tied for 64
th, and
Brett Inserra was 66
th, while
Trent Geritz was 74
th.
Vanderbilt, the tournament's host, won the team race, and San Diego State's Puwit Anupansuebsai was the individual medalist.
