ANNAPOLIS, Md. –
Brandon Berry shot 1-over 211 over three rounds to earn his first collegiate victory, and the Loyola University Maryland golf team ran away with its fourth Patriot League title since 2014, winning by 18 strokes, on Sunday at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Club.
The Greyhounds will play in the NCAA Regionals for the first time since 2017. The Golf Channel will broadcast the NCAA Selection Show live on Wednesday, May 5, at 2 p.m. where Loyola's destination will be revealed.
Sunday's victory marked the 21st conference championship for the Greyhounds since 1990. They won 17 titles in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) before Loyola joined the Patriot League in 2013-14.
Berry and senior classmate
Evan Brown finished one-two at the event. Brown was three shots back of Berry at 4-over, and he was seven shots in front of a group of six golfers who tied for third at the event on the 7.025-yard, par-70 course.
Brett Inserra tied for 11th at 14-over and shooting a 3-over 73 on Sunday, his best round of the tournament.
Trent Geritz and
Carlo Pizzano tied for 18th, and
Nick Mejia tied for 21st.
After rounds of 69 and 70 on Saturday, Berry was 1-under and leading Brown by four strokes entering Sunday's final 18. He strung together six-straight pars to start the round before bookending a birdie on the eighth with bogeys on seven and nine.
He posted three more pars to start the back nine before birding the par-5 13th to get level for the round. Berry, however, bogeyed 14 and 16 around a par on the 15th to stand at 2-over for his round and 1-over for the tournament.
Berry then tapped in a par putt on the par-3 17th, and he put his approach on the 18th within 20 feet where he two putted for the win.
Brown was 3-over on Sunday after 15 holes following two-straight bogeys, but he birdied the par-4 16th hole before nearly acing the 17th.
His tee shot on the 165-yard par-3 came up less than two feet short of the hole, but he tapped in for a birdie before a par on the final hole of the tournament.
The Patriot League Championships continued a season in which Berry and Brown have strung together consistent high finishes. Brown's second-place finish is his fifth top-5 finish of the year and third in a row. Berry now has top-15 finishes in all six tournaments, top-10s in five and top-5s in four.
Berry was named the Patriot League's Most Outstanding Player, and Head Coach
Chris Baloga was tabbed the Coach of the Year for the fourth time.
The Greyhounds will play in the NCAA Regionals for the 10th time in program history. They will be at one of six regional sites nationwide: The Sagamore Club in Noblesville, Indiana; Seminole Legacy Golf Club in Tallahassee, Florida; Championship Course at UNM in Albuquerque, New Mexico; Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma; Golf Club of Tennessee in Kingston Springs, Tennessee; or Tumble Creek Golf & Country Club in Cle Elum, Washington.
