PHILADELPHIA – Loyola University Maryland's women's novice eight crew became the third boat in team history to win gold at the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta, while
CJ Kaloudis and
Alex Perez added a bronze medal in the varsity pair competition to lead the Greyhounds' men's program in a strong finish to their 2021 season.
The novice eight group of
Megan Gallucci,
Emily Hunt,
Isabela Botto,
Erin Megill,
Emma McCann,
Daniella Niedermeyer,
Hannah Seyffert,
Gabbie MacNeil and coxswain
Delaney Gibbons became the first Loyola eight boat ever to place first at Dad Vails after completing their race in a time of 7:22.94. That beat out crews from La Salle (7:32.21), Stockton (7:52.89) and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (7:54.70).
Kaloudis and Perez, meanwhile, earned bronze in the varsity pair after their mark of 7:50.36 just edged out Lafayette's 7:51.74 finish, with Kaloudis taking home a medal in his final collegiate race. They are the fourth Loyola pair to medal at Dad Vails, joining crews from 1999, 2003 and 2017).
"With the short season this spring, we've talked a lot about this being the mid-point of a bigger cycle that completes in May 2022," head coach
Megan Patrick said. "Taking home Dad Vails gold and bronze at the mid-point of a cycle is a pretty nice place to be. I'm really proud of the team and have high expectations for the future."
The Greyhounds Novice 4 boat of
Kylie Miller,
Anna Kelley,
Katie Krueger,
Grace Aberle and coxswain
Ana LoConte also qualified for the afternoon final after placing third in their heat. They completed the morning heat in 8:34.27, finishing comfortably ahead of fourth-place Thomas Jefferson (9:01.61).
The Dad Vail Regatta is held annually on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, and it is the largest collegiate regatta in North America. Full results from this year's competition are available below.
The Loyola women have one more big event on their schedule, as they will compete in the Patriot League Championships on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J., next weekend.
