Coan ’18, Hermes Set to Represent Team USA in 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games

McClain Hermes (L) and McKenzie Coan (R)
TOKYO – McKenzie Coan '18 and current Loyola University Maryland junior McClain Hermes will both begin competition at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games this week, with opening ceremonies scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. eastern time on Tuesday.

Coan and Hermes were two of 34 swimmers to earn a spot on the United States roster earlier this summer. Coan, the reigning world champion in the 100 and 400-meter freestyle, will be making her third appearance in the Paralympics while Hermes is on the roster for a second time.

This year's Paralympic Games will take place from August 24 – September 5. Coan will race in five events, beginning with a preliminary swim in the 400 freestyle (S7 classification) at 8:16 p.m. eastern time on Saturday, while the first of Hermes' four individual events is the 400 freestyle (S11 classification). Preliminaries in that event begin at 9:11 p.m. eastern time on Wednesday.

The full competition schedule for Coan and Hermes is available below. NBCSN will be the primary television home for the Tokyo Paralympics, with coverage airing from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. daily. Coverage will also be available on NBC, the Olympic Channel, NBCOlympics.com and the Peacock/NBC Sports apps. Additional streaming information is available here.

Loyola has had several Paralympic standouts in recent years, a legacy which continues this summer. Head coach Brian Loeffler was honored as the Paralympic National Coach of the Year in 2014 after guiding four Paralympic athletes to one world and 10 American records.

Coan was a three-time gold medalist at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro after winning the 50m, 100m and 400m free events, and she is a 10-time medalist (five gold, five silver) at the World championships. Hermes, who will be entering her third season with the Greyhounds this fall, cracked the top eight in the 100 backstroke in Rio and claimed gold in the 400 free at the 2017 World championships.
