Take Two

  • Loyola University Maryland volleyball plays its second tournament of the 2021 season this weekend with a trip to nearby Towson University.
  • The Greyhounds will play four games in the Towson Invitational at SECU Arena, starting with a 1:30 p.m. match against Princeton on Friday, September 3. Loyola will then face the host Tigers that evening at 6:30 before matches against Stony Brook and Morgan State on Saturday at 1:30 and 6:30.
  • Live stats and a webstream will be available on loyolagreyhounds.com for all four matches.

Solid Start

  • The Greyhounds went 2-1 during their opening weekend of competition, finishing second at the ODU Invitational. Loyola lost its season-opener in three sets to West Virginia before sweeping Hampton and host Old Dominion in its final two matches of the weekend.
  • The Greyhounds hit .169 to their opponents' .141, averaging nearly three more kills per set.

Early Honors

  • Abby Hamilton and Katie Forsythe were named to the ODU Invitational All-Tournament Team, and Forsythe picked up Patriot League Player of the Week recognition for the fourth time in her career on Tuesday.
  • Hamilton led the Greyhounds' offense with 3.89 kills per set, and she also chipped in with 2.56 digs and a team-high three aces.
  • Forsythe tallied 67 digs in just nine sets for an average of 7.44 per. She finished the weekend ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division I in digs per set.

Two Of A Kind

  • The Greyhounds played a pair of setters throughout the first weekend of competition with Kacy Sekunda and Ashley Dwyer effectively splitting duties. Sekunda saw time in six of the Greyhounds' nine sets and averaged 7.33 assists, while Dwyer played in eight and dished out 6.75.

Climb Toward 1,000

  • Abby Hamilton opens the 2021 season needing 98 kills to reach the 1,000 mark for her career in just over two seasons (including the abbreviated 2020 campaign that included just six matches). Three matches into the year, she is 63 away from hitting the plateau, going into the Towson Invitational with 937. The native of Colgate, Wisconsin, has averaged 3.37 kills per set in 70 career matches with a career-best 3.71 in 2019 when she finished fourth in the Patriot League in the stat category.
  • Hamilton posted double-digit kill totals in all six of the Greyhounds matches last season, finishing each of the six matches with no fewer than 14. During her career, she has logged 10 or more kills in 57 of 70 outings with 10 of those contests of nine or fewer coming during her freshman year of 2018.

League-Leading Libero

  • Katie Forsythe has been the class of the Patriot League's liberos since stepping onto the court as a freshman in 2018, and by just about any measure, she has been the class of most liberos nationwide.
  • After three seasons plus three matches, Forsythe is averaging 6.06, a mark good for No. 3 in NCAA Division I history, and she is the NCAA's active career leader in that stat category.
  • The three-time Patriot League Libero of the Year and All-Patriot League First Team honoree has totaled 1,686 digs in her career that has stretched just nine matches over two seasons (a total of 70), ranking her third all-time at Loyola and seventh in Patriot League history.
  • She has finished in the top four of Division I players in digs per set during all three of her collegiate seasons, ranking fourth in 2018, third in 2019 and fourth in 2020. Her averages of 5.86, 6.17 and 6.04 are the three highest in Patriot League history.
  • She was the first player in Loyola history to earn American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Region honors, doing so in 2019 when she was also named the ECAC Defensive Player of the Year. She was then invited to Colorado Springs for Team USA tryouts following that season.
  • Forsythe became the fastest player in Loyola and Patriot League history to reach 1,000 digs in a career, doing so in 44 matches whens he hit the plateau on September 22, 2019. She set conference and school records that year with 697 digs in a season.

Two Better Than Five

  • Loyola's two most-recent full seasons (2018 and 2019) produced 15 Patriot League victories during the regular-season and two trips to the conference championships. In the Greyhounds first five years in the League, starting in 2013, they won just 13 conference matches.

Preseason Picks

  • Katie Forsythe was named to the seven-player Preseason All-Patriot League Team for the third-straight year, and the Greyhounds were picked to finish fifth in the conference by a vote of league coaches.

Meet The Freshmen

  • Loyola's four freshmen – Sophie Brenner, Maya Dudockin, Rose McDermott and Kacy Sekunda – saw their first collegiate action last weekend in Norfolk, each playing in at least two sets.
  • Brenner led the Greyhounds with 17 kills in the win over Old Dominion and averaged 2.86 per set across seven. Sekunda had 44 assists and eight digs, while Dudockin posted a .400 hitting percentage in three sets.
