COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Loyola University Maryland's
Sandra Aguirre and
Jessica Bodewes won their respective singles flights this weekend as the Greyhounds' women's tennis team competed at the University of Maryland's Bedford Cup.
Aguirre won four matches in straight sets in the 'E' Flight, topping George Mason's Savanna Crowell, 7-5, 6-3, in the title match of the bracket.
Bodewes won her first two contests in two sets and then had to overcome a first-set loss to outlast Howard's Hana El Sherif for the 'F' flight crown. The players split the first two sets, 4-6, 6-2 before Bodewes edged El Sherif in a supertiebreaker, 11-9, for the iwn.
Abby Decker took third in the 'E' flight after winning a pair of matches before falling in the semifinals. She then came back in the third-place match to beat George Mason's Jenin Al-Asadi, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5).
Julia Thompson was fifth in that flight, winning her final match, 6-4, 6-0 against Howard's Emnet Simunyola.
Bodewes and
Lauren Manwiller took fifth in the 'B' doubles flight, getting past teammates
Brooke Santoriello and
Genevieve Wurtz, 6-2, in the final match. Manwiller and Bodewes got to the fifth-place contest via a 6-3 win over a George Mason duo, while Santoriello and Wurtz were 6-2 winners against Loyola teammates
Taylor Kuncl and
Lauren Williamson.
Kuncl came out of the 'F' singles flight consolation bracket as the winner, beating Santoriello in the final and fellow teammate
Addison Kemerer, 6-4, 6-4, in the semifinal.
Ronnie Gruseck was eighth in the bracket.
