  • The Greyhounds were up 37-31 midway through the third quarter, but the Rockets (5-2) hit all five 3-pointers and shot 71.4 percent overall while outscoring the visitors 27-9 over the final 10 minutes.
  • Charia Roberts scored a career-high 13 points for Loyola while hitting 5 of 11 field goal attempts and 3 of 4 free throws.

  • Lockett, who entered the game ranked 17th nationally in scoring at 20.3 points per game, set a new season high with her 30-point effort. She hit 9 of 15 field goals, 5 of 9 attempts from 3-point range and all seven of her free throws.

Back in Action

  • Loyola will be playing its first game in 25 days on Wednesday after the program's last three contests were postponed or cancelled due to COVID protocols.
  • The Greyhounds' December 23 matchup at St. Francis Brooklyn was cancelled, while Patriot League games against Army (Dec. 30) and Holy Cross (Jan. 2) were postponed.
  • Loyola's home game with Army was rescheduled for 2 p.m. on Wednesday,  Feb. 2 at Reitz Arena.

Series History

  • Boston U leads 9-6 in a series which began when Loyola joined the Patriot League in 2013-14.
  • BU has won six of the last eight meetings overall, including a season sweep during the 2019-20 campaign. Both games were close, low scoring affairs, as the Greyhounds fell 44-42 on the road and 41-39 at Reitz Arena.
  • Loyola's last win in the series was a 59-55 road triumph on March 6, 2019. The Greyhounds' last victory in Reitz came on Feb. 28, 2018 (65-52).

Scouting Boston U

  • The Terriers (5-7, 1-0 PL) have won three of their last five games after dropping their previous four contests. They topped Navy by an 82-58 final in their conference opener on Sunday.
  • Fr. G Alex Giannaros was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week after scoring a team-high 18 points, while So. F Caitlin Weimar added 14 points and 13 rebounds in the victory.
  • Melissa Graves, previously an assistant at Wake Forest for the previous three years, was hired as head coach last April. She replaces Marisa Moseley, who accepted the head coach position at Wisconsin after leading Boston U to the Patriot League Championship game last winter.

Quick Hits from Toledo

  • Charia Roberts' career-high 13 points came on 5 of 11 shooting from the floor, and she also hit 3 of 4 free throw attempts. Her previous scoring high was 12 points, a mark she reached two times earlier in the season.
  • Taleah Dixon (4-9 FG, 2-3 3FG) reached double figures for an eighth time in 10 games to begin the year. She has scored at least nine points in every contest.
  • Loyola had four different players score in double figures for a fourth time this season.
  • The Greyhounds, who were up 28-27 at the intermission, fell to 1-3 when going into halftime with a lead.
  • Loyola shot 80 percent (8 for 10) from the free throw line. The Greyhounds have now shot 75 percent or higher from the charity stripe in 7 of 10 games on the year.
  • Toledo shot 71.4 percent from the field and hit all five 3-pointers while outscoring the Greyhounds by a 27-9 margin in the fourth quarter.
  • Loyola dropped to 0-5 in road games this season. The Greyhounds are 3-2 in their first five games at Reitz Arena this winter.

New Season Begins Wednesday

  • Loyola's final 18 games of the regular season will all take place against Patriot League opposition, starting with Wednesday's matchup against Boston U.
  • Loyola was ranked ninth out of 10 schools in this year's Patriot League preseason poll. The Greyhounds went 8-22 (5-13 PL) during their last full season of competition in 2019-20.
  • Loyola's best Patriot League season came in 2015-16, when the Greyhounds finished third in the standings with an 11-7 conference record and ultimately advanced to the Patriot League Championship game.

Therien Remains Among Patriot League Rebound Leaders

  • Lex Therien has made an immediate impact in her debut season, ranking second on the team in scoring (10.1 ppg) and first in rebounding. Her 9.4 rebounds per game are third overall among Patriot League players.
  • Therien is a two-time Patriot League Rookie of the Week, earning the award on Nov. 22 and Dec. 6. She has scored in double figures in 7 of 10 games on the year, including a season-high 14-point effort at Howard on Dec. 1.
  • Therien has grabbed 6+ rebounds in every contest this season, and she posted double-doubles against Fairleigh Dickinson (Nov. 14) and Hofstra (Nov. 20).

Dixon Leading the Offense

  • Taleah Dixon's 13.1 points per game lead Loyola and rank 11th overall in the Patriot League. She scored a season-high 23 points (8-16 FG, 3-7 3FG) in a Dec. 4 win over Mount St. Mary's.
  • Dixon also paces the Greyhounds in both free throw percentage (86.4, 38-44) and 3-point FG percentage (42.9, 15-35). She is third among Patriot League shooters and 48th nationally in FT%.
  • Dixon is one of three team captains for Loyola this season, along with Laryn Edwards and Bri Rozzi.

Salmerón Named Patriot League Rookie of the Week

  • Laura Salmerón was announced as the conference's top rookie on Dec. 13 following a pair of double-digit scoring performances.
  • Salmerón averaged 14.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals in Loyola's last two games, including a season-best 18-points (7-11 FG, 4-7 3FG) during a Dec. 8 matchup against Morgan State.
  • Her four 3-pointers against the Bears were the most by a Loyola player this season.
  • Salmerón added 10 points at Toledo, reaching double figures for a fifth time in 10 games during her debut season. She also leads Loyola and ranks eighth in the Patriot League in minutes per game (33.6).

Worth Noting

  • The Greyhounds have been tied or led in the fourth quarter in eight of 10 games this season under first year head coach Danielle O'Banion.
  • With her 23 points on Dec. 4 against the Mount, Taleah Dixon became the first Greyhound to score 20+ points in a game since Feb. 13, 2021 (Isabella Therien - 21 pts vs. Navy).
  • Dixon totaled 20+ points for the fourth time in her collegiate career, and the first time since she had a career-best 26 during the 2019 Patriot League quarterfinals at Bucknell.
  • Loyola's 63-57 win over UMBC on Nov. 17 was the program's first victory after trailing by 14+ points in the second half since Feb. 10, 2012 vs. Iona (66-60).
  • Loyola's overtime victory over FDU on Nov. 14 was the program's first in extra time since Jan. 2, 2017 at Lafayette. The Greyhounds are now 3-9 in OT dating back to March 4, 2011.

O'Banion Continues First Season in Charge

  • Danielle O'Banion was announced as the 12th head coach in program history on April 23, joining the Greyhounds after spending the past three seasons as an assistant at the University of Minnesots.
  • O'Banion brings over 20 years of Division I coaching experience to Baltimore. Her teams have combined for 10 postseason appearances, including five NCAA tournaments and one trip to the Final Four during her first stint with Minnesota in 2004.
  • Originally from Arlington, Virginia, O'Banion returns to the Mid-Atlantic after coaching stints at Minnesota, Memphis, Kent State and Harvard. A standout recruiter who has brought in four Top-50 classes during her career, she has also held multiple leadership positions within both the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and Advocates for Athletic Equity (formerly Black Coaches and Administrators).
  • This will be O'Banion's second head coaching position, as she led Kent State's program from 2012-16.

Looking Ahead

  • The Greyhounds hit the road for their next two conference games, beginning with a 2 p.m. matchup at Bucknell on Saturday.
