SPARKS, Md. – Loyola University Maryland short-stick defensive midfielder
Payton Rezanka is one of 50 players who were invited to participate in a September 23-25 training camp at U.S. Lacrosse headquarters in preparation for the 2023 World Lacrosse Championships.
Rezanka was one of more than 100 who participated in a tryout session last month and was invited back to play with the group.
The native of San Diego will return to the Greyhounds in 2023 for his final year of eligibility after earning All-America Third Team recognition from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) in 2022.
In earning All-America, as well as All-Patriot League First Team recognition, Rezanka continued Loyola's rich history of top-level short-stick defensive midfielders in 2022 with his play on the defensive end of the field and in transition.
He racked up a team-high 27 caused turnovers, the most by a short-stick nationally this season, while also picking up 31 ground balls.
The senior, who will return for the 2023 season, added three goals while helping Loyola rank sixth nationally in clearing percentage this year at 90.4 percent. His caused turnover, ground ball and goal totals all represented career-highs.
The 2023 World Lacrosse Men's Championship will be held in San Diego, Calif., from June 21 to July 1, 2023. Snapdragon Stadium, a new 35,000-seat stadium slated to open this fall on the campus of San Diego State University, will be the site of the opening and closing ceremonies, the opening game, the semifinals and the medal round games. The University of San Diego's Torero Stadium will host the majority of featured games, and fields on both campuses will be used for the event which will feature 30 nations and more than 100 games.
