Swimming & Diving Increases Leads At Thomas Murphy Invitational

BALTIMORE – The Loyola University Maryland men's and women's swimming and diving teams continued to strengthen their leads at the three-day Thomas Murphy Invitational where the Greyhounds lead teams from Johns Hopkins, Towson and UMBC.
 
The men's team has 2,521.50 points to Towson's 1,442.5, Johns Hopkins' 1,158 and UMBC's 1,123. Loyola's women are in front with 2,084.5 points to Towson's 1,552, UMBC's 1,326.5 and Johns Hopkins' 1,033.
 
Patrick Hayburn and Lily Mead set individual school records on Saturday night, and the women's 200 freestyle relay team brought down another. That relay team, as well as the men's 400 medley and 200 freestyle squads also set pool records, while the three relays and two individuals also set meet records.
 
Record-Setting Performances Hound Winners
  • Loyola won four individual events during the second finals session with Michaela Schultz, Lily Mead, Harry Hearn and Joe Hayburn taking top honors.
  • Schultz started the trend of touching first, winning the 100 butterfly in 55.80, just over a half-second in front of Samantha Cosato of Towson.
  • Mead then won the 400 individual medley by more than seven seconds with a swim of 4:17.86 to top teammate Riley Fried who was second.
  • Hearn was first to the wall in the men's 200 freestyle with a time of 1:41.04, beating Johns Hopkins' Kellen Roddy by 42-hundredths of a second.
  • Loyola then took first through third in the 100 backstroke with Joe Hayburn winning in 48.06, Patrick Hayburn taking second (49.02) and Cameron Shinnick third (50.42).
Relay Ready Decisive Depth
  • The Greyhounds' depth was on display in Saturday's finals.
  • Patrick Hayburn, Mueller and Shinnick took second through fourth in the men's 100 butterfly.
  • After Hearn won the 200 freestyle, Jonah Goodman and Riley Coyle were third and fourth.
  • Schultz was the winner in the 100 butterfly, while Kaitlin Witkop, Laura Latham and Alana Andress were fourth through sixth.
  • Loyola took third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh in the men's 100 breaststroke with Gozdan, Verheyen, Zach Eisenmann, Michael Venit and Connor Libassi finishing in those spots.
Closing Time
  • The three-day meet will conclude on Sunday with preliminaries at 10 a.m. and finals starting at 6 o'clock.
