EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. –
James Rico finished tied for 13
th individually, and the Loyola University Maryland golf team tied for ninth in a field that included four teams in the nation's top-25 and five in the top-75, at the Hamptons Intercollegiate at Maidstone Club.
Alabama won the event that Loyola hosted for the fourth time near the tip of Long Island. The Crimson Tide shot 24-under in the three rounds to beat Ohio State by three strokes and UCLA by four. Alabama's team score of 840 set a tournament record.
UCLA's Luke Powell shot 4-under 68 on Tuesday to win medalist honors with a 54-hole tournament record of 199. He edged Alabama's Nike Dunlop by a stroke for the title.
Rico, who shot rounds of even-par 72 and 2-under 70 on Monday, carded two double bogeys in his first six holes on Tuesday and was 4-over through six. He rallied to birdie the nest two holes, the 16
th and 17
th on the course, and he then strung together seven pars in a row.
The sophomore then birdied the seventh and eighth holes before a bogey at nine ended his day at 1-over 73 and his tournament at 1-under 215.
Of the 12 players who finished better than Rico, all but two played for teams ranked in the top-75 nationally, and nine came from Alabama, UCLA, Ohio State and Virginia.
Mike Crowley tied for 30
th for the Greyhounds, and
Jackson Roman shot 3-over across the tournament's final 36 holes to move into a tie for 38
th.
Connor McGarrity, playing as an individual, shot 1-over 73 on Tuesday and took 46
th overall.
Gustavo Rangel tied for 61
st, and
Turner Foster was 64
th.
Loyola will take two weeks off before playing in their penultimate fall event. The Greyhounds will head to Rockville, Maryland, and Woodmont Golf Club for the Georgetown Intercollegiate on October 15 and 16.
