ARBUTUS, Md. – Loyola University Maryland men's basketball took an eight-point lead, 45-37, less than two minutes into the second half, but UMBC came out of a timeout and scored 15 seconds later to kick off a 16-2 run it would take to a 94-79 non-conference victory on Sunday.
Deon Perry scored two of his team-high 18 points with a jumper at 18:09, forcing a Retrievers timeout with Loyola leading by eight.
Khydarius Smith, however, got into the paint and scored for UMBC (3-2 overall) at 17:53 for the first of six-straight Retrievers points.
Golden Dike had a dunk off a Perry assist at 16:21 to put Loyola back up four, 47-43, but the Retrievers scored the next 10 points with Smith tallying a dunk in transition to make it 53-47 at 14:40.
Loyola (1-4) got back within three, 55-52, on a Perry three at 14:01, but Smith responded with a jumper in the paint to make it a five-point game. The Greyhounds would not draw closer than five for the rest of the game.
Perry scored 18 points, tying Smith and Devan Sapp for game-high honors, and he had a team-best four assists. Dike and
D'Angelo Stines both had 15 for Loyola, while
Tyson Commander and
Alonso Faure each had eight. Faure led Loyola with nine rebounds.
Loyola will be off for almost a week before traveling to Columbia, Missouri, for a Saturday, November 25, game at the University of Missouri.
