BALTIMORE – Saturday's first set was tied on 14 occasions, and the lead changed hands seven times, but Colgate University turned a 14-14 tie into a 19-15 advantage, and the Raiders went on to a 25-19, 25-20, 25-20 Patriot League victory over Loyola University Maryland.
Sophie Brenner had one of her team-high 10 kills for Loyola to tie the score at 14-14, Colgate went up after a Greyhounds' service error.
Another kill by Brenner would get Loyola back within a point at 16-15, but Colgate reeled off the next three points to lead by four on an Abby Shadwick kill.
Colgate's blocking played a major role in the second set as the Raiders had six of their 10 block in the frame to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Greyhounds tied the third set late when
Kennedy Stevens had a kill at 16-16, but Colgate scored three in a row, capped by a Frances Torres kill that forced a Loyola timeout.
Stevens sided out for the Greyhounds with a kill after the break, but Loyola would not be closer than two the rest of the match.
Loyola had 43 kills to Colgate's 38 in the match, but 25 hitting errors by the Greyhounds were key to the Raiders.
Brenner had 10 kills,
Lauren Link tallied eight, and Stevens put away seven.
Link and
Rose McDermott both had 14 digs for Loyola.
Bryanne Soares (14 assists, 10 digs) and McDermott (14 digs, 10 assists) both had double-doubles for Loyola.
The Greyhounds wrap up the regular-season next Saturday when they head to Worcester, Massachusetts, for a match at College of the Holy Cross.
