BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Loyola University Maryland freshman guard
Deon Perry led the Greyhounds' men's basketball team in scoring during conference games, and on Monday he was named to the Patriot League All-Rookie Team by a vote of league coaches.
Perry raised his game throughout conference play and finished the regular season averaging 13.6 points in 18 Patriot League affairs. In 31 games overall this year, Perry has put up 11.1 points per game for the Greyhounds.
The product of Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School in the Baltimore Catholic League, Perry has been at his best over the second half of conference play. He has scored 168 points in those nine games, an average of 18.7, while shooting 49.3 percent from 3-point range (36 of 73) and 97 percent from the free-throw line (32 of 33).
During the stretch of the last nine, Perry has four games with 20 or more points to raise his season total to five. He posted a to-date career-best 28 points in a February 11 win at Lehigh, and he has scored 27 and 22, respectively, in the Greyhounds last two games.
Perry's impact on the game has also shown at the defensive end where he is third in Patriot League games with 32 steals, an average of 1.8 per outing.
Among freshman at the NCAA Division I level, his 51 total steals this year rank eighth, and his 345 total points are 32
nd.
Perry is the seventh Loyola men's basketball player to earn All-Rookie Team honors since the Greyhounds joined the conference in 2013-14.
Loyola will open the Patriot League Championships on Tuesday, February 28, when it hosts at first-round game at 7 p.m. in Reitz Arena.
