WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Loyola University Maryland men's and women's tennis teams both scored wins over College of the Holy Cross on Saturday with the women taking a 4-0 sweep and the men pulling out a down-to-the-last-match 4-3 win.
Earlier in the day, the women won the doubles point against Army West Point, but the Black Knights were 4-1 winners overall.
In the men's match against the Crusaders, Holy Cross opened with the doubles point as William Kelleher and Connor Nelson got past
Matt Cardano and
Oliver Davey at No. 2, and Alessandro Bizzarri and Patrick Ling topped
Dylan Koziol and
Trevor Girandola, 6-1, at No. 3.
Camilo Illanes extended the Crusaders' lead to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over
Nick Haggar at No. 6, but
Matt Cardano got the Greyhounds on the board with a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Jeremy Clark at No. 1.
Kelleher pushed Holy Cross within a point of clinching the match by winning, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 over Koziol at No. 4, but Loyola rallied to win the next three matches.
Nick Lawliss closed out Declan O'Flynn, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4), at No. 3, and Davey was a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 winner against Nelson at No. 2.
Girandola then scored the clinching match win, 0-6, 6-3, 6-4, against Ling at No. 5.
In the women's match,
Lauren Manwiller and
Christine Richiez beat Ashley Zilora and Caroline Fredey, 6-1, at No. 2 doubles, and
Olivia Tracey paired with
Liza Tankimovich for a 6-2 victory against Lindsay Riordan and Maddie Hamm at No. 3 to take the point.
Richiez knocked off Jasmine Rahman, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 3 singles, and
Katie Moorhead was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at No. 4 against Fredey.
Taylor Kuncl also had a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 6 against Riordan to complete the sweep.
In the morning match against the host Black Knights, Loyola got out to an overall lead with two doubles wins. Manwiller and Richiez beat Julia Kelly and Sabile, 7-5, at No. 2, and Tracey and Tankimivoch prevailed against Paige Herremans and Isabella Brillant, 7-5, at No. 3.
Army West Point, however, won four singles matches to claim the match.
Cooper Jackson defeated Tracey, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1, and Maria Drobotova topped Manwiller, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2.
Emma Sy got past
Emi Shivkumar, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 4, and Yian Duong beat Tankimovich, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5.
