BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland women's tennis won the No. 2 and 3 doubles matches on Wednesday afternoon to take an opening 1-0 lead over the U.S. Naval Academy, but the Midshipmen won all six singles contests for a 6-1 Patriot League victory.
Lauren Manwiller and
Christine Richiez evened doubles at one win for each side with a 6-4 victory over Kate Lee and Parvathi Shanker after the Midshipmen's Casey Accola and Sia Chaudry topped
Taylor Kuncl and
Emi Shivkumar at No. 1, 6-0.
Liza Tankimovich and
Olivia Tracey then outlasted Corinne Faird and Hanna Elks Smith, 7-6 (5) at No. 3 to earn the first point.
Lee and Sylvia Eklund earned wins for Navy at No. 5 and 6 singles, however, with Lee getting past Kuncl, 6-2, 6-0, and Eklund beating
Madison Metzdorf, 6-3, 6-0.
Samantha Johns topped
Katie Moorhead, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 4, and Accola beat Tankimovich, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3 to clinch the match for the Midshipmen.
Loyola's No. 1 and No. 2 players drove their singles matches to third sets before the Navy players eventually prevailed. Emily Tannenbaum took the first set off Manwiller, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, but Manwiller came back to even the match at a set apiece with a 6-3 win in the second. Tannenbaum, however, closed out the win with a 6-1 third.
Chaudry went up in the No. 2 match with a 6-3 victory in the first against Richiez, but the Loyola player came back to win the second, 6-5. Chaudry survived a super-tiebreaker in the third, 10-7, to win the match.
