Men’s Tennis Advances To Patriot League Quarters With Win Over Holy Cross

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Matt Cardano, Nick Lawliss and Ryan Boland secured singles victories for the Loyola University Maryland men's tennis team on Thursday, sending the Greyhounds to the Patriot League Quarterfinals with a 4-2 win over College of the Holy Cross.
 
The Greyhounds' No. 1 and 3 doubles teams provided wins in that setting to garner the other point.
 
Holy Cross built an early lead in doubles as Declan O'Flynn and Will Kelleher beat Oliver Davey and Harry Zeiders, 6-2, at No. 2. The Greyhounds tied things with a Nick Lawliss-George Cavo win at No. 1 as they defeated Allessandro Bizzarri and Jeremy Clark, 6-4. Cardano and Quintana the closed the point with a 6-4 victory against Connor Nelson and Patrick Ling.
 
The Crusaders evened the score at 1-1 when Ling topped Zeiders, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5 singles, but Cardano came back to put Loyola in front after a 6-4, 6-0 win against Bizzarri at No. 1.
 
Nelson again tied things for the Crusaders, beating Davey, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2.
 
Lawliss gave Loyola a 3-2 lead overall by outlasting O'Flynn, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, at No. 4, and Boland closed the match with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory over Kelleher at No. 3.
 
Cavo's singles match against Camillo Illanes went unfinished with Cavo winning the first set, 6-4, and Illanes up 6-5 in the second.
 
The Greyhounds will take on top-seeded Navy in the quarterfinals on Friday morning at 9 o'clock.
