BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland scored the last three goals of Friday night's game to get within one with 36 seconds to play against the U.S. Naval Academy, but the Greyhounds could not equalize the score in an 11-10 Patriot League loss.
Navy scored five in a row in the last 11 minutes of the third quarter to lead 8-4 on a Tommy Vovivian goal with just over six seconds left in the frame.
Loyola, however, stopped the run with a goal 47 ticks into the fourth when
Adam Poitras beat his defender from below goal line to score unassisted. As he dodged, he took a hit to the head which drew a two-minute non-releasable penalty on Navy, putting Loyola on extra-man.
Joey Kamish scored first during the man-up situation for Loyola, converting an 18-yard shot at 13:16.
Will McCulloch then scored as the penalty expired to close the gap to 8-7 with 12:11 left in regulation.
The Midshipmen rebounded, however, scoring at 10:58 on a Max Hewitt goal, and Jon Jarosz and Henry Tolker scored at 6:56 and 6:11 to extend the Navy lead back to four, 11-7.
Loyola began to 10-man ride the Midshipmen and disrupt their offense from that point forward.
Davis Lindsey scored unassisted with 2:42 on the clock, and
Payton Rezanka then scored in transition at 1:53 to draw Loyola within two. Lindsey added his third of the game, beating a pole from behind the cage to score topside with 36 seconds left.
The Greyhounds won the ensuing faceoff, but a high-to-low shot from 15 yards out was the last of Navy's Pat Ryan's 23 saves, and Navy cleared the ball successfully to run out the clock.
Lindsey had a team-high four points on three goals and an assist, while
Seth Higgins and Poitras each had a goal and an assist. Kamish, McCulloch, Rezanka,
Dylan Binney and
Mustang Sally each had single goals, and
Henry Haberman added an assist.
Loyola outshot the Midshipmen, 54-45, and it had 42 ground balls to Navy's 31. The Greyhounds also had a 13-11 advantage in faceoffs as
Eric Pacheco led the way by going 12 of 22.
The Greyhounds continue Patriot League games on Saturday, April 15, when they play a 12-noon game at Boston University.
