Men’s Lacrosse Trio Earns All-Patriot League Honors

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Adam Poitras and Payton Rezanka were named to the All-Patriot League First Team, and Matt Hughes received second-team recognition on Monday as the conference released its men's lacrosse postseason honors.

The trio will lead the Greyhounds into the Patriot League Championships with a quarterfinal-round game on Tuesday, May 2, at the U.S. Naval Academy at 7 p.m.

Rezanka earned the recognition for the second year in a row, and his honor marks the third time in as many seasons that the Greyhounds have had the top short-stick defensive midfielder in the conference. The All-League selections are the first for both Poitras and Hughes.

A member of the USILA All-American Second Team last season, Rezanka entered the 2023 campaign with high expectations that he continued to meet and exceed. He spent the fall with Team USA in training camp for the 2023 World Lacrosse Championships and rejoined the Greyhounds for spring practice. He has dominated opposing offensive players ever since.

Reznaka has 16 caused turnovers and 15 groundballs this season while also contributing eight points on three goals and five assists in transition offense. Over 69 games in his career, Rezanka has 70 caused turnovers to rank ninth all-time at Loyola overall and second amongst short-stick defensive midfielders (Pat Laconi, 75, 2011-14).

Poitras has been one of the most consistent offensive presences in the Patriot League and he has already tied his career-best for points with 38. Poitras has a point in all 14 games and a goal in 13 of those outings while registering seven multi-goal games; he has five games with three or more goals, including four each in the last two of the regular season against Colgate and Lehigh.

He continued his strong play after a 2022 summer that was spent playing lacrosse. He captained his hometown Whitby Warriors of the Ontario Junior 'A' Box Lacrosse League to the league title and then the Mann Cup, the national title of junior box lacrosse in Canada. He was Most Valuable Player of both tournaments, and then he went on to win a silver medal for Canada at the World U-21 Championships in Ireland. In four years at Loyola, Poitras has scored 71 goals and has 110 assists for the Greyhounds over the course of 53 games.

Hughes garnered second-team recognition as a steady presence on the Greyhounds' close defense this year as in the past three. He has been a starter on close since 2021 and continues to be amongst the Greyhounds' leaders in caused turnovers and ground balls. This season, he has 43 ground balls, the most on the team amongst non-faceoff players. He also leads the Greyhounds with 22 caused turnovers.

A graduate student who is completing his M.B.A. at Loyola, Hughes ranks 10th in school history with 10 caused turnovers, and he also has 113 ground balls in his 51-game career.
