The Anne Arundel County native recently concluded a standout prep career that included breaking Michael Phelps' record at Loyola's Mangione Pool at the National Catholic High School Championships in January. Hayburn dominated the finals in the 100 backstroke, winning by nearly three seconds with at time of 47.61, knocking almost a half-second off Phelps' time of 48.10 from 2002.
He also won the 100 butterfly at the meet in 49.07, and he led off St. Mary's 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays with personal-best times of 20.66 in the 50 freestyle and 22.45 in the 50 backstroke.
Hayburn, the 2022-23
Annapolis Capital-Gazette Swimmer of the Year, will be the fourth of his family to swim for the Greyhounds, following his older siblings Anne '20 and Jimmy '22 and current Loyola junior-to-be Patrick.
In March, the younger Hayburn won two races at the Speedo Sectionals in Buffalo, taking first in the long-course 100 backstroke (55.86) and 200 backstroke (2:02.64). He was a five-time winner in February at the Maryland, taking first in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard backstrokes, as well as the 50- and 100-yard freestyles.
He took sixth at the 2022 Speedo Junior National Championships in the 100 backstroke and also won three titles at last year's Speedo Sectionals.
Competitors are eligible for the World University Games if they are students at a collegiate institution, are incoming freshmen to such a school or have been former students who graduated within the last year.
