Poitras Selected Second Overall In 2023 NLL Draft

OAKVILLE, Ontario – Loyola University Maryland graduate student Adam Poitras was selected second overall by the Las Vegas Desert Dogs in the first round of the 2023 National Lacrosse League (NLL) Collegiate Entry Draft.

He is the second Loyola player to be selected in the first round of the NLL Draft in as many years. Fellow Canadian Cam Wyers was the 13th overall selection by the Buffalo Bandits in 2022.

His selection at No. 2 overall is the highest a Loyola player has been drafted in the NLL since Gavin Prout was the top pick of the New York Saints in 2001.

Poitras, who will play for the Greyhounds in 2024, was an All-Patriot League First Team honoree in 2023 when he led the team with 34 goals and tied for team-high honors with 49 points. He earned All-American recognition from Inside Lacrosse and USA Lacrosse Magazine, as well, after scoring at least one point in all 17 of the Greyhounds' games.

He goes into the 2024 season with 121 career points on 79 goals and 42 assists.

An accomplished indoor lacrosse player from Whitby, Ontario, Poitras also has played field lacrosse at the international level. He helped the Canadian U-21 team to the silver medal at the 2022 World Championships in Limerick, Ireland.

That same summer, he was a standout in the box game, earning Most Valuable Player honors of the Ontario Junior 'A' Lacrosse League's Mann Cup Championships and later the Minto Cup as he led the Whitby Warriors to the Canadian Junior title in 2022.

Poitras has been a standout in the classroom, as well, and was named a USILA Scholar All-American and to the Academic All-Patriot League Team in 2023. He completed his Bachelor of Science in biology in May 2023 and is currently pursuing a master's degree at Loyola.

He is the second professional sports draftee in his immediate family. His younger brother, Matthew was a second-round pick (54th overall) of the National Hockey League's Boston Bruins in 2022.
