BALTIMORE –
Delaney DeMartino nodded in a header to give Loyola University Maryland women's soccer a 1-0 lead in the 13
th minute over the visiting U.S. Naval Academy, and the Greyhounds completed the shutout for their second-straight regular-season win over the Midshipmen.
Loyola's victory pushed its winning streak to five matches, the longest for the program since 2009 when the Greyhounds won nine in a row.
Paige Sim made two saves in goal and logged her 29
th career clean sheet, one shy of tying the school record of 30 set by Erin Gilroy from 1994-97.
The Greyhounds (7-2-0 overall, 2-0-0 Patriot League) got on the board when
Kelly Hutton crossed a bar from deep on the right side.
Baylee DeSmit headed the ball from inside the 18 to DeMartino on the left side. She redirected her shot with a header of her own and into the net for her third goal of the season.
Loyola continued to pressure offensively, outshooting the Midshipmen (5-2-3, 1-1-0), 8-3 in the first half. Three additional shots before the break were on goal, forcing Navy to make saves.
At the start of the second half, Loyola got off three shots in the first 15 minutes – two by DeSmit and one by Hutton – but none found the net.
DeSmit had an attempt in the 65
th minute that saw Navy's Mattie Gallagher to make a full-extension diving save.
The Greyhounds got off two more shots in the next 14 minutes before Navy would record its first of the second half. That attempt by Alexa Riddle was saved by Sim.
Overall, Loyola held a 17-7 advantage in saves and a 4-1 margin in corner kicks.
The Greyhounds continue their homestand with a 2 o'clock game at Ridley Athletic Complex on Saturday, September 23, against Lafayette College.
