Three Former Greyhounds On NBA Opening Night Rosters

Three former Loyola University Maryland student-athletes are on the 2024-25 Opening Night rosters of NBA teams, the first time more than one Greyhounds player has appeared on the roster of a team the first night of the season.

Santi Aldama and Cam Spencer will be a part of the Memphis Grizzlies' roster, while Cam's older brother and former Loyola men's lacrosse All-American Pat Spencer will be on the Opening Night roster for the Golden State Warriors.

Aldama will start his fourth year with the Grizzlies after his best statistical season with the team in 2023-24 and a starring role for the Spanish National Team in the 2024 Olympics.

Last season, Aldama averaged 10.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game for the Grizzlies. During the summer, Aldama led his native Spain to the Olympic Qualifying Tournament title, earning TISSOT Most Valuable Player honors after averaging 17.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and 1.5 assists in four games.

In Olympic play, Aldama posted 17.7 points and 9.3 rebounds per game in pool play with a team-high 19 points in a win over Giannis Antetokounmpo and Greece. He then had a game-best 27 points against Australia.

Aldama played in 27 games during 2019-21 for the Greyhounds; he averaged 19.0 points and 9.2 rebounds in that stretch, including leading the Patriot League in scoring with 21.2 points and rebounding (10.2) in 2020-21 before becoming an NBA First-Round Draft Pick in July 2021.

Pat Spencer will be in his second NBA season and on his first Opening Night roster coming out of Training Camp and Preseason with the Warriors.

The former Loyola men's lacrosse standout was a four-time All-American and winner of the 2019 Tewaaraton Award as college lacrosse's top men's player. He graduated from Loyola as the school's all-time leader in points (380) and the NCAA Division I leader in assists (231), and he then spent a graduate studies season as a basketball player at Northwestern in 2019-20.

Spencer played professionally in Germany in 2021 before joining the NBA G League in 2021-2022 for the Washington Wizards' Captial City Go Go. He then played for the Santa Cruz Warriors in the G League from 2022-2024 before making his NBA debut last season for Golden State.

He saw action in five regular-season games for the Warriors and is on a two-way contract with the team this year, starting the season on the NBA roster.

Cam Spencer came to Loyola in the same freshman class (2019-20) as Aldama and was an impact player for the Greyhounds as a first-year player. He earned Patriot League All-Rookie Team recognition that season after finishing with 10.0 points and 3.1 assists per game despite missing nine due to injury.

The missed time carried over to his sophomore season where he missed the first 12 games of 2021-22 but came back to pair with Aldama to lead Loyola to the Patriot League Championship Game. He was then an All-Patriot League First Team player, leading the conference in scoring, as a junior in 2021-22 when he scored 566 points, an average of 18.9, to go with 95 assists (3.2).

Spencer spent his fourth year of college at Rutgers before transferring to Connecticut in 2023-24 where he helped the Huskies win their second-straight NCAA Championship.

He was a second-round draft pick of the Detroit Pistons and went to the Grizzlies organization on a Draft Day trade where he will again be a teammate of Aldama. He suffered an ankle injury while playing in the Las Vegas Summer League that limited his participation in the preseason, but he will be with the team as it opens the season on Wednesday night at the Utah Jazz.

Several other former Greyhounds are playing professionally around the world, including:

  • Golden Dike (2019-24): Menorca; Spanish Primera FEB
  • Jan Dornik (2018): LTH Castings; Slovenian First League
