SAN PEDRO GARZA GARCIA, Nuevo Leon –
Mike Crowley and
Jackson Roman shot a combined 21-under par at the Monterrey Collegiate Classic this weekend to lead the Loyola University Maryland golf team to its third top-two finish of the fall.
Crowley tied for third individually, and Roman tied for fifth, at Club Campestre Monterrey at 11- and 10-under par, respectively.
The Greyhounds were shot a three-round total of 848 (16-under par) to finish second. Loyola beat Utah State by a stroke and Richmond by two; North Dakota State won the event by 10 shots.
Competitors played 27 holes on both Friday and Saturday with the second round being split over both days.
Roman opened Saturday by birding three of the course's first five holes in the back nine of his second round to finish the 18 holes at 5-under 67 and move into fourth place through 36 holes.
Crowley was tied with him at seven under following a 1-under 71 in the second round, and he then beat Roman by a stroke in the final 18 shooting 4-under 68 to Roman's 3-under 69. Crowley tied Davidson's Will Davis at 11-under, two shots behind the winner, Texas-Rio Grande Valley's Juan Luis Bethencourt.
Gustavo Rangel moved up four spots in the final round with a 1-under 71 to finish tied for 25
th, and
Garrett Kessler followed his 2-under 70 in the second round with a 2-over 74 to tie for 47
th.
Dustin Stocksdale tied for 66
th at 13-over, and
Lorenzo Sanz was 71
st at 16-over.
The tournament was the final of five fall tournaments for the Greyhounds.
Loyola finished in the top seven as a team at all five events with three second place finishes at the Howard/USF Intercollegiate, The Goat and this weekend in Monterrey.
The Greyhounds also had a tie for fifth at the Georgetown Intercollegiate and a seventh-place finish at the Hamptons Intercollegiate that featured four teams ranked in the top-35 nationally, including No. 1 Ole Miss.
Crowley's third-place finish in Monterrey makes him the third different Loyola player to finish in the top three of a tournament this fall, joining
Eli Spaulding (T-2
nd, Howard/USF Intercollegiate) and Rangel (1
st, The Goat). Roman led Loyola with three top-10 finishes (T-7
th, Howard/USF Intercollegiate; T-9
th, the Goat; T-5
th, Monterrey Collegiate Classic).
