CALI, Colombia – Four Loyola University Maryland swimmers earned gold medals and a total of six were on the podium Wednesday during the second day of competition at the FISU America Games.
Lily Mead and
Joe Hayburn picked up their second gold medals of the event, winning top honors in the 200-meter backstrokes one day after winning the 100-meter versions.
Caleb Kelly became an individual gold medalist in the 50-meter freestyle shortly after teaming with
Joe Hayburn, Boston University's Kyle Falkstrom and
Patrick Hayburn to win the men's 400-meter relay.
That team combined to go 3:47.40 to beat the Brazilian entry by almost five seconds.
Mead was the first individual gold medalist of the day for Loyola, winning the women's 200-meter backstroke in 2:22.49, edging Argentina's Josefina Allport by two-tenths of a second.
Joe Hayburn came back minutes later to win the men's 200-meter backstroke in 2:02.68, nearly seven seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
Kelly cut throught he water in 23.48 seconds to win the men's 50-meter freestyle by less than two-tenths of a second over Argentina's Nicolas Retrive. Patrick Haybrun finished seventh in the event in 24.25.
Harry Hearn earned his first medal of the games with a silver in the men 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:07.86. His Loyola teammate
Cameron Shinnick grabbed his second bronze of the day with a time of 2:08.63 in the race.
Shinnick also had a third-place finish of 4:14.72 in the men's 400-meter freestyle, an event in which Hearn was fourth in 4:17.75.
The pair were not done on the podium as they returned for their third event of the day in the men's 800-meter freestyle relay where they were third along with Falkstrom and Boston University's Tony Ponomarev in 8:03.92.
Mead had two more trips to the podium on the second day of the games, taking third individually in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:14.20) and then combining with American's Mimi Watts, Colgate's Lucy Art and Lehigh's Marin Ludwig for silver in the 400-meter medley relay (4:25.24).
