BALTIMORE – Johns Hopkins University scored three goals in a stretch of just over five minutes, and the 10
th-ranked Blue Jays extended their lead to four and went on to a 13-7 victory over No. 17 Loyola University Maryland on Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field.
Joey Kamish took a
Seth Higgins pass and scored on the doorstep for Loyola, drawing the Greyhounds to within a goal, 7-6, with 12:40 left in regulation, but the Blue Jays' Hunter Chauvette used a Jacob Angelus assist to score at 10:30 and spark the Blue Jays' run.
Angelus was involved in the next two goals for Johns Hopkins (3-1 overall), assisting on a Matt Collison tally with 8:12 left on the clock. He then scored for the Blue Jays at 5:17 to play, and they led, 10-6.
Evan James and
Adam Poitras combined for a Loyola goal at 4:45 when James fed Poitras in the middle for a low-to-low goal from 12 yards out, and the Greyhounds were back within three.
The Blue Jays, however, scored three times in the final three minutes to provide the final difference.
Luke Staudt made 17 saves in goal for the Greyhounds (1-2).
Johns Hopkins got on the scoreboard first with a Collison goal 8:41 into the game, but Loyola scored twice before the end of the first quarter. Poitras quick sticked a
Davis Lindsey feed from behind to score at 2:51, and James knocked down a 15-yard shot from the top left with 1:13 on the clock.
The Blue Jays scored twice on extra-man in the first nine minutes of the second quarter, but
Matthew Minicus evened the game at 3-3 with 4:38 on the clock, converting a Greyhounds' man-up opportunity.
Dylan Bauer and Brendan Grimes scored in the first three minutes of the second half for Johns Hopkins to give the Blue Jays a 5-3 advantage, but
Henry Haberman made a left-to-right run through the middle for a goal with 9:56 left in the third.
Angelus answered, however, just 19 ticks of the clock later for Johns Hopkins, and Garrett Degnon scored his third with 3:52 in the third, putting Johns Hopkins ahead 7-4.
Just over a minute later, Staudt made a save in transition for Loyola, and after a clear, Poitras found Minicus on the crease for a one-timer at 2:13, and the game went into the final quarter with the Blue Jays up 7-5.
Poitras finsiehd with two goals and two assists, while MInicus had three points on two goals and an assist.
Loyola returns to Ridley Athletic Complex to host Rutgers University at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 24.
