NORWALK, Conn. –
Jackson Roman played the last two rounds of the Connecticut Open presented by GSB at 11-under par to finish the 90
th playing of the tournament with a three-shot victory at Shorehaven Golf Club.
Roman, who is a rising senior at Loyola University Maryland, finished with a 4-under 71 on Wednesday to wrap up the tournament at 12-under. He held off Christopher Fosdick, a recent graduate of the University of Virginia, who played with Roman in the final group and ended at 9-under.
Fosdick opened Wednesday's third and final round up a stroke after shooting 68-64 to sit at 10-under through 36 holes. Roman was two-shots back after going 70-64 Monday and Tuesday.
The Loyola player quickly turned the deficit into a lead with an eagle three on the first hole where Fosdick bogeyed. Fosdick then bogeyed the second hole, and Roman was up three after a birdie.
Fosdick closed the gap quickly with birdies on the next three holes, and the players were tied at 11-under through five holes. The two made the turn to the back nine still tied at 11-under with Roman posting seven-straight pars after his eagle-birdie opening.
Roman lost a shot with a bogey at the 10
th hole, but he made back-to-back birdies on the 12
th and 13
th to lead by a shot at 12-under par. Fosdick bogeyed the 13
th and had a double bogey on the 15
th, giving Roman a three-shot lead through 15.
Both players had pars on the 16
th and 17
th holes, and the two birdied the 18
th. Roman's win is the first by an amateur player at the Connecticut Open since 2008
Roman became the second current or former Loyola player to win a state open this summer. Brandon Berry, '21, M'22, won the Massachusetts Open last month. Incoming freshman
Eli Spaulding won the Maine Amateur, as well.
Roman will play in the U.S. Amateur Championship in August at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota where he will be joined by Spaulding.
Last season, Roman earned PING/GCAA All-Region honors after finishing third on the team with a 73.00 scoring average. He had three top-10 finishes and a pair of top-threes.
