Fourth Quarter Surge Falls Short for Women's Hoops

BALTIMORE — Loyola University Maryland showed late fight behind a fourth-quarter surge, but the Greyhounds couldn't overcome a double-digit deficit, falling 69–50 to Mount St. Mary's on Thursday night at Reitz Arena in a non-conference matchup.

Lex Therien powered Loyola with a team-high 26 points and eight rebounds, anchoring the Greyhounds on both ends while going 12 of 16 from the free-throw line. Kimmie Hicks added 11 points, including a pair of key third-quarter buckets that helped stem a Mount run, and Koi Sims contributed six points and nine rebounds, giving Loyola productive minutes in the paint.

Loyola opened confidently, taking a 3–0 lead on a Sims three, and as the Greyhounds and Mountaineers battled early. But a 12-4 Mountaineer run closed out the first quarter to give them a 23-10 lead after one quarter.

The Mountaineers momentum continued early in the second quarter, outscoring Loyola 10-3 over the first seven minutes of the second quarter. Therien closed out the half with four points over the final minute to cut the deficit to 39-21 at half.

Despite the deficit, Loyola refused to fold. Therien scored 12 of her points after halftime, and the Greyhounds posted their best offensive period in the fourth, outscoring the Mount 18–17 while holding them without a field goal for several stretches. Hicks went a perfect 6 for 6 at the line in the quarter, part of Loyola's 71.9% free-throw mark (23 of 32).

Loyola also forced 22 turnovers, including 13 steals, and generated 16 points off Mount turnovers.

The Greyhounds cut the deficit down to 11 points with just under five minutes remaining, but The Mount responded with a three-pointer to extend their lead once again, as they held on for the road win.

Loyola will be back on the road this weekend, as they will travel to face Yale on Sunday afternoon.
