AUSTIN — Loyola University Maryland junior
Joe Hayburn finished fifth in the 100-meter backstroke at the U.S. Open Championships on Friday night.
Hayburn swam 54.64 seconds in the event to take fifth after qualifying eight in the morning preliminaries.
Brennan Coyle took 28th in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:03.02, and
Luke Dwyer was 31st in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 54.89.
Several Greyhounds also competed Friday in the first day of the JHU Invitational.

In the men's 500-yard freestyle, Pierre Leroy claimed second place in 4:33.38, closely followed by teammate Thomas Cechini, who finished third in 4:36.98. On the women's side, Noelle Hoffman took fourth in the 200-yard individual medley, clocking 2:10.65. In the women's 50-yard freestyle, Kelly Bruen tied for sixth with a time of 24.92, and later swam 2659. in the 50-yard backstroke time trial. Virginia Walsh captured first in the 200-yard backstroke time trial, posting 2:04.52.
Hans Van Lierop sprinted to victory in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.53. Dylan Covington (21.83), Elias Corn (22.23), and Peter Weinstein (22.51) also represented Loyola in the event. In the 200-yard individual medley, Josh Stegner finished sixth in 1:55.48. Tyler Knurek swam 50.48 in a 100-yard backstroke time trial, while Floyd Conlin swam 56.53 in a 100-yard breaststroke time trial.
Loyola's men's 400-yard medley relay team of Leroy, Stegner, Corn, and Cechini finished fourth in 3:32.07, rounding out a strong showing for the Greyhounds on the opening day.
