WASHINGTON, D.C. – Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse jumped out to a 4-1 lead Saturday against 11
th-ranked Georgetown University, but the Hoyas went on a 6-0 run that spanned 20 minutes, and they went on to a 13-6 season-opening win at Cooper Field.
Matthew Minicus, who scored a team-high four points on two goals and two assists, scored on extra-man with 2:52 left in the first quarter, and Loyola led 4-1 after less than 13 minutes.
The game went more than three minutes into the second quarter with that score before Kevin Miller tallied a goal for Georgetown that broke a 3-0 Greyhounds' run at 11:26.
Aidan Carroll scored 80 seconds later, and Joe Cesare tacked on a tying goal with 4:34 to go in the second quarter. Miller converted his second goal with 1:56 left in the half, and Georgetown took a 5-4 lead into halftime.
Cesare and Fulton Bayman scored in the first 2:12 of the second half, pushing the Hoyas' lead to 7-4, but Loyola would have an answer.
Henry Haberman connected for his second of the day with a Minicus assist at 12:00, and Minicus then had his second assist of the day with a skip pass to
Luke Murphy on the high left side for a step-down goal at 5:47.
Murphy's goal closed the gap to a goal, 7-6, but the Hoyas ended the game with six-straight goals for the final margin.
Cesare and Miller each had three goals to lead Georgetown.
Brady West got the Greyhounds on the board with the game's first goal at 10:18, while Minicus had two first-quarter goals and Haberman also tallied one.
Max Watkinson made 12 saves in goal for the Greyhounds, and
Chase Gregory led Loyola with four ground balls.
Remi Reynolds had a team-best three caused turnovers, and
Joe Houlihan added two.
Loyola will make its 2025 home debut on Saturday, February 8, with a 1 p.m. game against fifth-ranked University of Maryland at Ridley Athletic Complex.
