BALTIMORE – Colgate University turned a 3-1 deficit into an 11-3 lead over the course of a 17-minute stretch, and the 15
th-ranked Raiders beat host Loyola University Maryland, 18-6, on Saturday at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Mason Cook scored his first collegiate goal with 8:27 to play in the first quarter, giving Loyola a 3-1 lead after
Brady Quinn and
Henry Haberman had earlier tallies.
Hunter Drouin broke through for the Raiders (4-2 overall, 1-0 Patriot League) and scored unassisted at 5:02, starting the 10-0 scoring stretch.
Jack Turner scored three times, and Rory Connor had two goals during the run, and Ryan Favaro's goal at 2:50 in the second quarter pushed the lead to 11-3.
Loyola (0-5, 0-1) would get one back 14 seconds later when
Matthew Minicus found
Luke Murphy in transition for a goal with 2:36 before halftime.
Cook recorded his second of the game, stepping down after a Haberman assist to score 57 ticks into the third quarter, but Liam Connor found the net at 12:05, and the Raiders scored four in a row and seven of eight to close the game.
Will McCulloch scored the Greyhounds' last goal of the game in the fourth quarter on Minicus' third assist of the day.
Carson Hall (9 of 15) and
Mason Graves (7 of 12) combined to give Loyola a 16 to 11 edge in faceoffs won with four ground balls each. The Raiders' 10-man ride, however, held the Greyhounds to 22 of 37 clearing. The teams combined for 45 turnovers with Loyola committing 25.
Max Watkinson had 13 saves in goal for Loyola, and
Ben Abel made three in the last 7:35 of the game. Matt LaCombe made 16 saves for Colgate.
Liam Connor had two goals and five assists for Colgate, and Casey Quinson added four goals and an assist.
Loyola will be on the road for its next two games, starting with a 12 noon game at Providence College on Saturday, March 8.
