PROVIDENCE, R.I. –
Henry Haberman had a first-quarter hat trick and finished with career-high numbers in goals and points Saturday, but a late Providence run gave the host Friars a cushion over Loyola University Maryland, and they held on for a 12-11 victory.
Haberman scored four goals and finished with five points for career-highs in both categories for the Greyhounds.
Matthew Minicus came out of a scrum with a ground ball and flipped in his first goal of the fourth quarter with 12:49 left in regulation, evening the game for the eighth time at 9-9.
The game was scoreless for over six minutes until the Friars' Jay Wilkerson broke through with an unassisted goal at 6:07 in the fourth. The score started a 3-0 Providence run that took just 65 seconds, and with Ryan Bell's goal at 5:02, the Friars led 12-9.
Following that goal, the Greyhounds forced a Providence turnover, and Loyola had a long offensive possession.
Kenan Everhart took the ball above goal-line extended on the left side and scored with the shot-clock winding down, making it a 12-10 game with 2:33 to play.
Loyola got the ball back with a faceoff win, and just over 90 seconds later, Minicus scored his second of the quarter with a
Will McCulloch assist to close the gap to a goal.
Carson Hall came up with the faceoff win and ground ball for Loyola after Minicus' score, and the Greyhounds took it to the offensive box. A shot was
Remi Reynolds was blocked and one by McCulloch went wide before Providence called a timeout with 23 seconds remaining. Out of the timeout, Minicus setup for a dodge off the wing. He got to the goal but was called for being in the crease, and Providence ran out the final seconds of the game.
Providence took a 2-1 lead in the first quarter with goals by Rhett Chambers and Richie Joseph wrapped around Haberman's first of the day.
Haberman then scored on extra-man at 4:21, and he added a right-handed hip-high goal from the left side with 1:38 to go in the quarter, sending Loyola to the second with a 3-2 lead.
Providence evented the game 6:05 into the third with a Joseph goal, but McCulloch fed
Diego Roman after a Loyola clear, and Roman scored his first collegiate goal at 5:19.
Mason Cook gave the Greyhounds a 5-3 lead with an unassisted goal at 2:49, but Jack Horrigan got one back for the Friars 1:24 before the half to make it a 5-4 Greyhounds lead at the break.
Wilkerson and Bell scored the second half's first two goals, and Providence regained the lead at 9:16 in the third, but Cook fed a cutting
Luke Murphy for a goal at 8:27 to tie the game at 6-6.
Haberman was on the assisting end of a Loyola goal 35 ticks of the clock later when he threw to McCulloch for a score. Loyola's 7-6 lead was short-lived, however, as Providence scored at 5:23 and 4:16 to gain an 8-7 advantage.
It was Haberman again for Loyola with a goal at 3:29 in the third, tying it off a Murphy assist, and the teams went into the final 15 minutes tied at 8-8.
Haberman finished with four goals and an assist, and Minicus had two of each. McCulloch tied his career-high with three points with a goal and two assists, while Cook and Murphy each had a goal and an assist.
Max Watkinson made 12 saves in goal for the Greyhounds, and
Remi Reynolds had a team-high four ground balls.
Mason Graves was 5 of 8 on faceoffs, and Hall won six.
Loyola will be back in New England on Saturday, March 15, for a 12 p.m. game against Boston University.
