Quick Hits About The Hounds
- Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse team goes back on the road to start a three-game road swing on Saturday, March 29, with a 12 noon game at Lehigh University.
- The game is the third in a stretch of five out of six on the road for the Greyhounds..
- Loyola has a decidedly new look on the field this season, particularly on the offensive end of the field. Of the six attack and midfielder starters from its last game of the 2024 season – the Patriot League Quarterfinals contest at Navy – Matthew Minicus is the only returner.
- That said, two of the Greyhounds' three starting close defenders from that game will be back in the fold this year, along with Loyola's top two long-stick midfielders.
- Charley Toomey is in his 20th season as head coach of the Greyhounds. It is also his 29th year as a member of the Loyola staff and 33rd with the program, including four as a student-athlete.
- The Greyhounds are in their 16th season of competition at Ridley Athletic Complex, which opened in 2010. The Greyhounds are 75-35 (.682) all-time at the stadium.
Looking Back
- A Lafayette goal with less than seven minutes left in regulation proved to be the difference Saturday in an 11-10 Leopards win over Loyola at Ridley Athletic Complex.
- Riley Sullivan scored unassisted off the left side to give the Leopards a one-goal margin. The Greyhounds had four possessions after the score came with 6:49 to play, but none resulted in a goal.
- The Leopards jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 5:30 of the game with goals by Jack Massotto and Liam Sargent, but Loyola opened the second quarter with four unanswered in less than four minutes to take a 4-2 lead.
- Brendan DiBattista scored his game-high third goal 38 seconds into the fourth quarter, staking Lafayette to a 10-9 lead. Mason Cook drew a holding flag against the Leopards, and he converted on the man-up with a Minicus top-down from a step outside the box with 12:34 on the clock, and the game was tied for the eighth time.
- Cook and Quinn both finished with two goals, while Minicus and Haberman had three assists each.
- The Greyhounds finished with a 35-27 advantage in ground balls.

Series History
- Loyola and Lehigh will meet for the 20th time in series history on Saturday and the 13th time since the Greyhounds joined the Patriot League in 2014. Loyola holds a 17-2 all-time lead in the series after a 12-10 win last year in Baltimore.
- The Greyhounds scored four-straight goals over a seven-minute, four-second stretch that spanned the first and second quarters to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 6-4 lead. Lehigh would get within one with 10 minutes to play in the second quarter, but that was as close as the Mountain Hawks would draw.
- Loyola's defense forced 24 Lehigh turnovers, the most by a Greyhounds opponent last season.
- The teams first met during the 1942 season in a game that the Greyhounds won, 12-1. The programs met in 1947 and 1948 and then did not see each other again until 1984.
- Loyola won the first 15 games between the schools until the Mountain Hawks took a 10-6 decision in March 2021. Both of their wins in the series have come in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania where Loyola is 5-2 all-time.
Learning On The Job
- Entering the season, the Greyhounds roster was significantly different than previous seasons with a 19 freshmen and two transfers with others who would see their first collegiate playing time after season-ending injuries previously in their careers.
- Through seven games this year, 18 players have made their collegiate debuts for the Greyhounds, 15 freshmen and three sophomores who did not play in their first years out of high school.
- Of those 18 players, three have started a total of 15 games – Kenan Everhart (eight), Kyle McCarthy (four) and Mason Cook (three) – and the others have seen considerable time in non-starting roles (defensive midfield, faceoff specialists, faceoff wings, second midfield).
All Over The Field
- Remi Reynolds has played in a slew of defensive roles over his three-plus years as a collegiate player. He saw action in all 19 games of his 2022 freshman campaign at Rutgers, playing as a long-stick midfielder for the Scarlet Knights. During the 2023 season, he moved to playing on the rope unit with a short stick and saw time in 13 games.
- Last year, his first with the Greyhounds, he started all 15 games on close defense and was the team leader in caused turnovers with 17. Reynolds also topped the close defense unit with 32 ground balls while earning All-Patriot League Second Team recognition.
- This year, Reynolds is a starter again on close defense, and he's impressed in the eight games thus far. He had three caused turnovers, two ground balls and a transition assist at Georgetown before going for a career-high five caused turnovers, four ground balls and his second goal as a Greyhound in the Maryland game. He picked up five ground balls in his return to Piscataway on February 22 against Rutgers, and he then tied his career-high with six off the ground against Colgate a week later.
- Through games of March 20, Reynolds is 16th in the nation in caused turnovers per game with 1.88 (15 total). He is second on the Greyhounds in ground balls with 30 this year.
- After the game against Maryland, Reynolds was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week and earned a spot on the USILA National Team of the Week.
Tops In Points
- Matthew MInicus opened the 2025 season, his junior campaign at Loyola, with a four-point effort against Georgetown, scoring twice and adding a pair of assists to lead the Greyhounds in all three scoring columns. He matched those totals on February 15 against Johns Hopkins, and through eight games, he has 21 career multi-goal outings and the 12 multi-assist performances.
- This year, he leads Loyola with 26 points on seven goals and 19 assists; he registered his 100th career point with a first-quarter assist against the Scarlet Knights. He has at least two points in every game this season.
- Minicus is 10th in the nation in assists per game (2.25) as of March 26 games.
- Minicus continued to be a key scorer for the Greyhounds in his second year with the program. The Darien, Connecticut, native had eight multi-goal games during the 2024 campaign en route to scoring 28 goals and posting 43 points.
- Minicus has played in 39 games for the Greyhounds and already has 118 points with 69 goals and 49 assists.
Murphy Makes Impact With Bigger Role
- Luke Murphy has played in every game since joining the Greyhounds for the 2023 season, seeing time on Loyola's second midfield unit. In 32 games during his freshman and sophomore seasons, he had six goals and four assists with three and two in each year.
- This year, Murphy has moved to the first midfield line and has scored goals in six of the eight games, and he is third on the Greyhounds with 11 points on six goals and five assists. He had a career-high three points on a goal and two assists against Johns Hopkins.
Standing Up In Starting Role
- The 2025 season has been Max Watkinson's first as a full-time starter for the Greyhounds in goal. The junior started two games in 2024, but before taking over the job in 2025.
- He has posted solid numbers in the first eight games of the year with 10 or more saves in each. Watkinson has posted his top two save totals with a career-high 19 at Rutgers and then 16 versus Colgate.
- This season, Watkinson has 106 saves in seven contests (13.25 per game), with a 54.4 saves percentage. He ranks 11th nationally in saves per game.
Cook-ing On Attack
- Mason Cook missed fall practice with an injury, but he has gotten up to speed early in his first season at Loyola. He has seen an increased role on offense over the Greyhounds' last three games, making his first collegiate start against the Providence.
- The freshman from Towson, Maryland, scored twice against Colgate and then had a goal and an assist at Providence. He added two more against Lafayette and has five goals on 18 shots this year.
Brady Building On Offense
- Brady Quinn took two shots in four games as a freshman last season, but this year he has developed into a starting midfielder for the Greyhounds. He has been in the opening lineup for Loyola over the last four games, and he has four goals and five points during that stretch.
- Quinn has taken just 13 shots this season, but he has converted on 46.2 percent of those attempts for six goals to go with two assists.
Starting To Sling It
- Henry Haberman scored a career-best four goals and had five points on March 8 at Providence and another last week against Boston University raised his team-leading total to 10; he is second on the Greyhounds with 16 points after a career-high three assists against Lafayette.
- Haberman played in 32 games over his first two seasons at Loyola and scored 12 goals to go with three assists as a freshman in 2023 and then had four and one last year.
- This season, Haberman already has a quartet of extra-man goals, a total that is 12th in the nation and third in the Patriot League.
Toomey's Team
- Charley Toomey is in his 20th year as the head coach at Loyola and his 29th as a member of the Greyhounds' coaching staff. Overall, he is in his 33rd year on the Evergreen campus, including his four seasons as a student-athlete from 1986-90.
- Toomey has a 184-109 career record. Early in the 2016 season, Toomey became the second coach in program history to reach and cross the 100-win plateau; he became the school's all-time leader in wins on April 6, 2023, passing Dave Cottle's 181.
- As a head coach, Toomey has coached 52 USILA All-Americans, 104 all-conference selections, 21 conference positional or players or rookies of the year, a Tewaaraton Award winner and five finalists and 28 USILA Scholar All-Americans.
- In January 2019, Toomey was named to the coaching staff of the U.S. Men's National Team as an assistant coach. He was an assistant for the gold-medal winning team at the 2023 World Championships in San Diego. Toomey will again be an assistant for Team USA in preparation for and competition at the 2027 Championships in Japan.
