LEWISBURG, Pa. –
Max Watkinson made a save on a Bucknell University shot 15 seconds into overtime, and on the other end of the field,
Brady West scored from 10 yards out to give the Loyola University Maryland men's lacrosse team a 12-11 overtime victory against the host Bison on Saturday in a Patriot League game.
Loyola cleared against the Bison ride after Watkinson's 17
th save of the game, and the Greyhounds settled into its offense.
Ryan McGorry dodged off the left side and threw to West who stepped into a shot from 10 yards to score 1:04 into overtime.
The Greyhounds overcame a three-goal second-half deficit when Peter Grandolfo scored 3:17 in to the third quarter to put Bucknell in front 9-6.
Mason Cook used one of
Matthew Minicus' two assists to score and get Loyola back within two with 4:27 left in the third.
Ryan McGorry dodged off the left side and scored 44 ticks into the fourth quarter, making it a 9-8 Bison lead.
Michael Meyer scored 31 seconds later, however, and the Bison lead was back to two. Minicus then ripped a high-to-high shots from the right side, scoring with 8:35 on the fourth-quarter clock, and the Greyhounds were again within one.
Bucknell, however, scored at 5:50 on a Connor Davis shot from left point to move the gap back to two, but the Greyhounds went on extra-man shortly thereafter, and Minicus converted with his fifth goal of the day at 4:02.
Loyola won the ensuing faceoff, and after a Cook shot was saved,
Brady Quinn took the ball back to X and dodged topside to the right of the goal. He turned back and scored his career-high third of the day with 3:00 remaining, tying the score at 11-11.
The Greyhounds again came up with a faceoff win off a
Brady Rogoff ground ball, but two Loyola shots on offense were saved over the next 90 seconds.
Bucknell gained possession and had 90 seconds of its own to try to regain the lead. Two Bison shots were blocked, however, and
Joe Houlihan came away with the ground ball for the Greyhounds in traffic. They cleared the ball, and
Henry Haberman had a shot just before time expired that was saved, sending the game to overtime.
Minicus finished the game with five goals and two assists, giving him 12 goals and three assists in two career games at Bucknell's Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium after he had seven and one in a 2023 Loyola win.
Quinn added career-highs of three goals and four points, and McGorry and West each had a goal and an assist. Cook scored twice,
Will McCulloch had an assist, and
Grady O'Day scored his first collegiate point with an assist in his first start for Loyola.
Watkinson made 17 saves in goal for the Greyhounds with eight in each half and the one in overtime.
Carson Hall won eight faceoffs, and
Sawyer Allen won four, with Hall's five ground balls leading the Greyhounds.
Loyola will be back in action on Tuesday, April 8, with a 6 p.m. game at Towson University for its final non-conference tilt of the season.
