BALTIMORE –
Matthew Minicus scored five goals and finished with a season-high seven points on Saturday afternoon at Bucknell, and he was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week Monday.
The Loyola University Maryland junior scored three times in the first half and then added a pair of goals in the second quarter as the Greyhounds took the lead early and later rallied from three down in the second half.
Minicus opening scoring in the game more than seven minutes into the contest with a right-side shot off a
Brady Quinn assist in the first quarter.
He assisted on
Mason Cook's goal less than two minutes later to put Loyola in front, 2-1, and his goal 90 ticks into the second quarter put the Greyhounds up, 5-2.
The Bison rallied, however, and scored the next four goals before Minicus broke the scoring run with a goal at 5:54 in the second quarter to tie the score at 6-6.
Bucknell took a 10-8 lead in the fourth quarter, but Minicus brought Loyola within one on a high-to-high from the right with 8:35 left in regulation. The Bison again took a two-goal lead at 5:50, but Minicus kicked off a 3-0 closing run by the Greyhounds with an unassisted extra-man goal at 4:02.
Minicus leads the Greyhounds in goals (13), assists (20) and points (33) this season.
He upped his career totals against the Bison to 15 goals and three assists in three games.
The award is the third Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week nod of Minicus' career. He earned his first weekly award in 2023 after scoring seven goals at Bucknell as a freshman.
Loyola will be back on the field Tuesday night at 6 p.m. when it plays its final non-conference game of the regular season at Towson.
