Baltimore -- The Loyola University Maryland women's soccer team remained unbeaten Sunday night, holding off Princeton University for a 2-1 victory at Ridley Athletic Complex. The Greyhounds improved to 3-0-1 and move to 2-0 on at home with the win.
Sophomore Anais Stephen opened the scoring in the 38th minute, finishing off a well-worked sequence with assists from Asma Merzougui and Taryn Buckley. Loyola entered halftime with the 1-0 lead, despite being outshot 10-2 in the half.
Princeton pulled even in the second half on a goal by Zoe Markesini, but the Greyhounds answered immediately. Just over a minute later, junior Francesca Khachatourians found the back of the net off a setup by defender Zoe Willis to put Loyola ahead for good.
Goalkeeper Hannah Goetzer was the backbone of the win, making eight saves to withstand Princeton's heavy pressure. The Tigers outshot Loyola 24-4 and controlled possession, but the Greyhounds' defense limited the clean looks on goal, forcing Princeton into long shots.
Loyola was efficient on the attack, converting two of its four shots into goals. The Greyhounds also used their bench to keep legs fresh, with key minutes from substitutes like Stephen, Khachatourians and Buckley making the difference.
Loyola remanins unbeaten, as they will be back at Ridley on Thursday evening when they host VCU at 7:00 PM.
