Women's Hoops Holds on for Win Over Bucknell

BALTIMORE — Lex Therien scored a game-high 22 points and Loyola University Maryland held on for 49-46 victory over Bucknell, thanks to some late game heroics from Amandine Amorich on Saturday afternoon at Reitz Arena.

The Greyhounds (6-9, 2-2 Patriot League) used an 8-2 run midway through the third quarter to pull away for their largest lead of the afternoon, going up nine and gaining control against the Bison (4-11, 0-4). Bucknell would chip away at the Greyhounds lead during the fourth quarter, as they took the lead halfway through the fourth quarter.

Therien tied the game up at 44-44 with 3:41 remaining in the quarter. Both defenses stepped up late, but the Bison's Reese Zemitis hit a pull-up jumper to pull ahead 46-44 with 1:31 remaining.

Amorich would come up big on the following possession, as she drilled a three-pointers to retake the lead. Loyola would force a turnover on the next Bucknell possession, before Bucknell would foul Olivia Shaugnessy to send her to the line late. After making her first free throw, she would miss the second, but Therien would come up with the crucial offensive rebound, before passing to Cristina Garcia, who was fouled. Garcia would make one of two free throws, as Loyola led 49-46 with 10 seconds left.

Coming out of the timeout, Bucknell's Zemitis got open in the corner, but Amorich recovered on defense, and blocked the three-point attempt. The Greyhounds defense held firm on the next attempt, as they held on for the win.

Therien finished 9 of 13 from the field and pulled down 11 rebounds to anchor Loyola on both ends. Amandine Amorich added eight points, including a timely 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter, while Whitley Watkins chipped in six points off the bench.

Loyola held a 32-18 advantage in points in the paint and a 9-2 edge in second-chance points, helping offset a low-scoring affair.

The Bison were led by Reese Zemitis who had 11 points, while Desirae Ashton added 10 points off the bench.

Loyola will hit the road next week for a two-game road trip, as they will travel to face Colgate on Wednesday.
