HAMILTON, N.Y. — Olivia Shaughnessy made the game-winning layup with seven seconds left, as the Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team held on for the 49-47 win over Colgate.
Amandine Amorich scored 12 points and Koi Sims added 10 points.
The Greyhounds (7-9, 3-2 Patriot League) controlled the game from the opening tip, building a double-digit lead in the first quarter and never relinquishing the advantage. Loyola led for more than 39 minutes and opened up its largest margin at 15 points midway through the second quarter.
Loyola's defense set the tone early, limiting Colgate to just five points in the opening quarter. The Greyhounds forced turnovers and converted second-chance opportunities to take a 15-5 lead after one, then carried a 27-17 advantage into halftime.
Colgate (5-11, 1-4) made its push in the fourth quarter, outscoring Loyola 18-10 over the final 10 minutes to tie the game late. The Raiders tied the game with nine seconds remaining, but a long inbound's pass from Therien found Shaughnessy, who made the layup to go back ahead. The Greyhounds defense force one last turnover to hold on for the win.
Lex Therien finished with nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds for Loyola, while Whitley Watkins chipped in four points, five boards, and three steals off the bench. The Greyhounds shot 85.7% (12-14) from the free-throw line, as their late shooting gave them an advantage.
Madison Schiller led Colgate with 11 points, and Ella Meabon added 10, but the Raiders were held to 32.8% shooting from the field.
Loyola remains on the road on Saturday afternoon, as they travel to Boston to take on the Terriers.
