Quick Hits

  • Loyola University Maryland's men's basketball team returns to Baltimore on Saturday, January 24, to open a two-game homestand.
  • The Greyhounds will host Bucknell University in Reitz Arena. The game has been moved to a 2 p.m. tipoff due to the winter storm moving into the region.
  • Loyola is in the midst of a stretch with four out of five games at home with another contest at Reitz Arena coming up on Wednesday night.
  • Josh Loeffler is in his second year as the Greyhounds' head coach after taking the position as Loyola's 22nd all-time head coach in March 2024. Last year, he led the Greyhounds to a five-win improvement over the 2023-24 season.
  • Loyola returns nine players to its roster from a year ago and features three seniors, four juniors, four sophomores and four freshmen.

Series History

  • Loyola and Bucknell will meet Saturday for the 34th time in series history and the 26th time since the Greyhounds joined the Patriot League for the 2023-14 season.
  • The Bison hold a 26-7 all-time lead in the series and have won the last six meetings, including a 70-67 decision two weeks ago on January 10 in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.
  • In this season's first meeting, Bucknell rallied from 13 down in the first half to tie the score at 28-28 at halftime. After Loyola took a 32-31 lead early in the second half on a Jacob Theodosiou transition dunk, the Bison went on a 12-0 run.
  • Loyola got the deficit to three or fewer on multiple occasions thereafter, including on a Braeden Speed jumper off a baseline out-of-bounds play with 38 ticks on the clock to make it 69-67 in the Bison's favor.
  • Loyola forced a missed three by the Bison, and the Greyhounds battled for a defensive rebound to retain possession. Speed brought the ball up the floor, but he was called for an offensive foul that led to Bucknell's final free throw and the game's end.
  • Theodosiou led Loyola with 20 points, Speed added 11, and Emmett Adair came off the bench to grab a team-high seven rebounds.
  • Loyola and the Bison played first in January 1987, meeting four times between then and 1993. The programs played a four-game series between 2009-2012 with the road team winning each of the four games.

Watch The Action

  • All Loyola home games this season will also stream live on ESPN+ and be available internationally on Sidearm.

Last Time Out

  • Braeden Speed's three with 56 seconds left tied the score at 81-81, but Lehigh would hold Loyola scoreless for the remainder of the game, and the Mountain Hawks went on to an 88-81 Patriot League victory at Stabler Arena.
  • Speed led the Greyhounds with 20 points and his three knotted the game for the ninth time, but Lehigh's Nasir Whitlock scored on jump and converted a free throw after being fouled 26 seconds later, and the Mountain Hawks claimed the 17th lead change of the contest.
  • Edouard Benoit and Joshua Ingram both made pairs of free throws for Lehigh to seal the win after Whitlock's basket, and Loyola did not come up with a basket on the offensive end.
  • Loyola led throughout much of the first half, but Lehigh came back to tie the score at 41-41 before halftime. A Jonas Sirtautas dunk off a Sebastien Emenalo assist with 12:05 to play in regulation gave the Greyhounds a 59-52 advantage, but Lehigh would tie the game at 61-61 less than three minutes later on a step-back by Jalen Vazquez.
  • Loyola led twice thereafter, but both were just one-point margins.
  • Emmett Adair scored 13 points, and Sirtautas added 12 for the Greyhounds who had nine players score four or more.
  • Whitlock scored a game-high 28, and Benoit had 18 for the Mountain Hawks.

Back To Speed

  • Braeden Speed is second on the team in scoring at 14.1 points per game, a mark that is up more than 2.5 points since the start of December over Loyola's last 11 games. He has led the Greyhounds in scoring in six of the last eight games, including five of seven conference outings.
  • The sophomore guard from Arizona had a stretch of five-straight games with 11 points or more (Nov. 6-19) snapped when he finished with five at then-No. 12 Kentucky, a game that started a three-game stretch where he totaled just 20 (six in limited action versus Washington College and nine against Coppin State).
  • Since then, Speed has scored in double figures in 11-straight outings with three 20-plus games and six with 15 or more mixed in.
  • He had his first collegiate double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds against Colgate. The game against the Raiders was the third 20-plus point game of Speed's collegiate career, joining his November 15 game against Stonehill when he had 21 and the December 21 contest at George Mason.
  • During the last 11 outings, Speed has averaged a team-high 16.4 points per game to go with 4.5 rebounds and a team-best 3.3 assists. He has shot 43.3 percent from the field, making 43.1 percent (25 of 58) from 3-point range. Overall this year, he is also first on the team in total rebounds (88) and assists (66).

  • Emenalo had the highest individual plus-minus of a Loyola player against a Division I opponent this year in the Boston University game at plus-31. Berg-McLean was a plus-15 against Colgate and plus-14 versus the Terriers.
  • The three were a plus-7 together against Lehigh despite a seven-point loss.

Adair Up There

  • Emmett Adair had the best game of his young career against Coppin State making 11 of 17 shots from the field, 3 of 6 from 3-point range, en route to scoring 29 points. • Adair had the second 20-plus point game of the season on December 9 at VMI, making 10 of 18 from the field to finish with 21 points.
  • Adair missed the first five games of Loyola's season with an illness, but he's been a key contributor since making his debut November 19 at Duquesne. Theodosiou's Last Fifteen

  • Jacob Theodosiou put together the best pair of games, statistically, in a three-game stretch against Stonehill, Fairfield and Duquesne, averaging 23.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 3.3 steals, but his numbers have also been robust over the last 14. He has scored 20 or more six times during a run in which he is averaging a team-best 16.5 points per game.
  • The junior guard scored 21 on November 15 against Stonehill before posting 27 the next day versus host Fairfield. He was named Patriot League Player of the Week following those games before scoring 21 against Duquesne on November 19.

  • Over the last 15 games he has played, Theodosiou has averaged 15.8 points, 3.9 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 2.1 steals.

  • Berg-McLean's presence has not solely been reflected in the box score, but can be seen in the Greyhounds' plus-minus when he has been on the floor. He was a plus-15 against Colgate (Loyola scored 15 more points than the Raiders during his 15 minutes of action). He also has 18 assists in conference games with four coming against Colgate, three at American and a to-date career-high seven at Lehigh.

Theodosiou's Thievery

At The Next Level

  • As a school of less than 4,000 undergraduate students, Loyola University Maryland boasted three former student-athletes on NBA rosters as players last month on opening night. Two members of the men's basketball incoming class of 2019, Santi Aldama (SAHN-tee ALL-dah-muh) and Cam Spencer are on the Memphis Grizzlies' roster, and four-time men's lacrosse All-American Pat Spencer is a member of the Golden State Warriors.
  • Aldama was a first-round draft pick in the 2021 NBA Draft after leading the Patriot League in scoring and rebounding in 2020-21, and Cam Spencer led the conference in scoring the following season. He has played in 276 NBA games through January 17 and is averaging 14.0 points and 6.7 rebounds in 41 outings this season after signing a four-year contract during the summer. He has starred for his native Spain, earning TISSOT Most Outstanding Player honors at the 2024 Olympic Qualifying Tournament before averaging 17.7 points and 9.3 rebounds in three games during the Olympics.
  • Cam Spencer, who was a three-year starter for the Greyhounds from 2019-22, and won an NCAA Championship at Connecticut in 2023-24, made his NBA debut on November 20, 2024 for the Grizzlies and is averaging 11.8 points in 41 games this season.
  • Pat Spencer holds the Loyola men's lacrosse records for career assists and points and was the 2019 NCAA Division I Player of the Year for the Greyhounds.
