COLLEGE PARK, Md.— The Unviersity of Maryland swept past Loyola University Maryland in women's tennis action Saturday, posting a 4–0 victory at the JTCC.
The Terrapins secured the opening point by taking two of three doubles matches, then clinched the decision with straight-set wins at the top of the singles lineup.
In singles play, Oliwia Orlinska of Maryland dominated at No. 1, defeating
Christine Richiez of Loyola Maryland 6–0, 6–0.
Maryland added another point at No. 4, where Lucia Donnelly earned a 6–3, 6–1 win over
Emma Roeck, and at No. 6, Katherine Hung closed out the match with a 6–0, 6–2 victory against
Emi Shivkumar.
Several other singles matches were underway but went unfinished once the team outcome was decided. At No. 2, Emma Ghirardato of Maryland led
Mia Matriccino 6–1, 5–2. At No. 3, Diya Challa held a 6–4, 3–0 advantage over
Elena Hartley, while Gabriela Pimentel was ahead of
Victoria Epps 6–4, 2–1 at No. 5.
Maryland set the tone early in doubles. The team of Ema Kovacevic and Emma Ghirardato earned a 6–2 win over
Christine Richiez and
Emma Roeck at No. 1, while Oliwia Orlinska and Magdalena Baniak followed with a 6–1 victory against
Emi Shivkumar and
Elena Hartley at No. 2. The No. 3 doubles match between Diya Challa and Aida Eissa of Maryland and
Victoria Epps and Liza Tamkimovich of Loyola Maryland was tied at 4–3 when play was halted.
