Early Run Helps Army West Point Past Men’s Basketball

BALTIMORE – Army West Point held Loyola University Maryland men's basketball scoreless for more than six minutes in the opening 10 of the first half Wednesday night and used a 16-0 run to build a lead it would not give up in an 87-77 Patriot League win at Reitz Arena.

Emmett Adair and Tyson Commander scored baskets in the first two minutes for the Greyhounds (11-17 overall, 7-8 Patriot League), but the Black Knights (11-17, 5-10) scored the next 16 and led 18-4 on a Kevin McCarthy layup at 11:25.

The Greyhounds rallied quickly with 11 of the next 15 points to close within five, 20-15, on two Troy Cicero Jr. free throws at 8:39. The next seven points, however, came from Army West Point to put a cap on the momentum.

The Black Knights led 48-31 in the first two mintues of the second half, but Loyola would again draw closer.

Braeden Speed scored on a layup and free throw at 10:58 to move the gap to nine, 58-49, and Cicero three at 8:55 got the Greyhounds within seven, 62-55.

Army West Point, however, shot 50 percent from the field after halftime to hold off Loyola.

Jacob Theodosiou led the Greyhounds with 15 points, while Speed had 13 and Jordan Stiemke 11. Sebastien Emenalo had a team-best eight rebounds and three blocked shots.

Loyola will go on the road for its next game, a Saturday, February 21, contest at Colgate University.
