CATONSVILLE, Md. – Loyola University Maryland scored all five first-quarter goals and held host UMBC to only one in the first half, paving the way for a 12-8 non-conference win on Friday night.
Mason Cook scored four goals and had an assist, while
Kenan Everhart,
Connor Wilbur and
Luke Murphy each scored twice.
Matthew Minicus had three assists, and
Max Watkinson made 11 saves in goal.
Murphy put the Greyhounds (1-2 overall) on the board with a hard right to left run, scoring 4:09 into the game. After a
Carson Hall faceoff win, Everhart fed Wilbur for a goal 21 ticks of the clock after Murphy's score.
Hall won another faceoff, and 31 seconds after that,
Chase Gregory scored with a Minicus assist to make it 3-0 at 9:59.
Everhart added an unassisted goal at 8:45, and
Brady Quinn had one with two seconds left in the first quarter to push the lead to 5-0.
UMBC scored 54 seconds into the second quarter to get on the board with a Connor Chick goal, but it would be the only one of the half for the Retrievers (0-2).
Cook tallied a man-up goal with a
Kyle McCarthy assist at 12:15, and he scored unassisted at 4:54. Cook tallied his third in a row, and second on extra-man, with 1:40 on the clock, and Loyola took an 8-1 lead to the locker room at halftime.
UMBC scored the first two goals of the second half and had an 18-7 shot advantage in the third quarter.
After the Retrievers two goals early in the quarter, Murphy and Wilbur had goals that made it 10-3 with 1:43 on the clock, but Jack Fish scored 13 seconds following Wilbur's tally, and it was a six-goal margin entering the final quarter.
UMBC then scored three in a row to start the fourth quarter with Fish's second making it 10-7 with 11:11 on the clock.
Everhart pushed the lead back to four with a goal off a Cook assist at 8:58, but Corey Myers got one back for the Retrievers at 6:48.
Cook added his fourth with 1:41 on the clock with a Quinn assist, sealing the win.
The Greyhounds will open Patriot League play on Saturday, February 28, when they travel to Hamilton, New York, to play Colgate University.
