Second Quarter Run Lifts Women's Lacrosse Over No. 9 Princeton

BALTIMORE — Morgan Quade scored three goals and added two assists, while Loyola University Maryland used a dominant second quarter to surge past Princeton University 14-10 on Saturday at Ridley Athletic Complex.

The Greyhounds (2-2) outscored the Tigers 9-0 in the second period, turning a 2-2 tie into an 11-2 halftime cushion they would not relinquish.

Quade opened the game with a pair of goals, while her third goal of the game ignited the run with an unassisted goal early in the second quarter before Mim Suares-Jury and Emma Talago took over. Suares-Jury netted three goals, including back-to-back scores during the decisive stretch, while Talago added three goals of her own — two coming on free-position attempts.

Ava Kane and Elisa Faklaris each found the net, and Lauren Perfetto and Olivia Blanding chipped in a goal and an assist apiece as Loyola's offense produced 35 shots and controlled the tempo throughout.

The Greyhounds also dominated the draw circle, winning 20 draw controls to Princeton's six. Mae Murphy led the effort with 11 draw controls, repeatedly giving Loyola extra possessions during its game-breaking second quarter.

Loyola converted 3 of 9 free-position opportunities and capitalized on multiple player-up situations. Faklaris scored twice, including a player-up goal midway through the fourth quarter that pushed the lead to 14-7.

Kennedy Buntrock made five saves in goal for Loyola, while the defense limited Princeton to just two goals through the first half.

Princeton (0-1) mounted a late push behind Meg Morrisroe, who scored five goals, and Jami MacDonald, who had three goals and two assists. The Tigers outscored Loyola 8-3 over the final two quarters, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.

Loyola finished with a 35-24 advantage in shots and a 12-10 edge in ground balls.

The Greyhounds will begin their four-straight road game stretch with a trip up to New York to face Syracuse on Tuesday evening.
