Quick Hits

  • The Loyola University Maryland men's basketball returns to Baltimore for a Wednesday, February 4, game against Lehigh University.
  • Wednesday's game is slated to start at 7 p.m. at Reitz Arena.
  • The game is the sixth of eight that Loyola will play at home before the Greyhounds embark on a two-game road trip starting on Saturday.
  • Lehigh is the third team Loyola will play twice in the Patriot League round-robin.
  • Josh Loeffler is in his second year as the Greyhounds' head coach after taking the position as Loyola's 22nd all-time head coach in March 2024. Last year, he led the Greyhounds to a five-win improvement over the 2023-24 season.
  • Loyola returns nine players to its roster from a year ago and features three seniors, four juniors, four sophomores and four freshmen.

Series History

  • Loyola and Lehigh will meet for the 55th time in series history on Wednesday evening and the 28th time since Loyola joined the Patriot League in 2013-14.
  • Loyola leads the all-time series by one games, 18-17, after sweeping the 2024-25 regular-season series and picking up a three-point win over the Mountain Hawks in the 2025 Patriot League Championships First Round. Lehigh won the first meeting between the teams just over two weeks ago on January 19 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
  • Braeden Speed's three with 56 seconds left tied the score at 81-81, but Lehigh held Loyola scoreless for the remainder of the game, and the Mountain Hawks went on to an 88-81 victory.
  • Speed led the Greyhounds with 20 points and his three knotted the game for the ninth time, but Lehigh's Nasir Whitlock scored on jumper and converted a free throw after being fouled 26 seconds later, and the Mountain Hawks claimed the 17th lead change of the contest. Whitlock finished with 28.
  • Loyola led throughout much of the first half, but Lehigh came back to tie the score at 41-41 before halftime. A Jonas Sirtautas dunk off a Sebastien Emenalo assist with 12:05 to play in regulation gave the Greyhounds a 59-52 advantage, but Lehigh would tie the game at 61-61 less than three minutes later on a step-back by Jalen Vazquez.
  • Loyola led twice thereafter, but both were just one-point margins.
  • Emmett Adair scored 13 points, and Sirtautas added 12 for the Greyhounds who had nine players score four or more.
  • The teams first played a pair of trio of games between 1913 and 1915 making Lehigh the second-oldest Patriot League foe of the Greyhounds other than Navy.

Watch The Action

  • Wednesday's game will stream live on ESPN+.
  • All Loyola home games this season will also stream live on ESPN+ and be available internationally on Sidearm.

Last Time Out

  • Navy used a 22-6 first-half run to build a 13-point margin midway through the period, and the Midshipmen later opened the second half with an 11-2 stretch to build another double-digit margin that would build into an 87-71 victory against Loyola at Alumni Hall on Saturday.
  • Emmett Adair finished one off his career-high with 28 points for Loyola, and Braeden Speed scored 25, but Navy shot 66.5 percent from the field overall.
  • Loyola led 11-8 just over five minutes into the game after two Speed free throws, but a Cam Cole jumper for Navy kicked off the scoring run that would build a 30-17 lead with 9:29 when Cole bookended it with a three. From there, however, two threes by Speed stopped the run, and over the next five minutes, Loyola hit a total of six from behind the arch with Speed knocking down three, Adair hitting one of his six and Sebastien Emenalo converting one from the corner.
  • Aidan Kehoe, who had a team-high 23 points for Navy while going 11 of 11 from the floor, scored twice inside before halftime, and the Midshipmen led 44-36 at the break. Adair scored the second half's first two points to bring the margin to 44-38, but Navy had the next 11 to go up 15, 55-40, with 12:45 to go in regulation.
  • Two Adair threes over a 51 second stretch got Loyola within eight, 72-64, with 5:40 on the clock, but the Greyhounds could not draw closer.
  • Speed and Adair combined for 52 of the Greyhounds' 71 points. Adair had a team-high seven rebounds, and Speed dished out a team-high four assists.

Back To Speed

  • Braeden Speed leads the team in scoring at 15.7 points per game, a mark that is up more than four points since the start of December over Loyola's last 14 games. He has led the Greyhounds in scoring in eight of the last 11 games, including seven of 10 conference outings.
  • The sophomore guard from Arizona had a stretch of five-straight games with 11 points or more (Nov. 6-19) snapped when he finished with five at then-No. 12 Kentucky, a game that started a three-game stretch where he totaled just 20 (six in limited action versus Washington College and nine against Coppin State).
  • Since then, Speed has scored in double figures in 14-straight outings with six 20-plus games and nine with 15 or more mixed in. He dropped his first 30-point game of his career on January 28 with 30 in a win over American.
  • He had his first collegiate double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds against Colgate. The game against the Raiders was the third 20-plus point game of Speed's collegiate career, joining his November 15 game against Stonehill when he had 21 and the December 21 contest at George Mason.
  • During the last 14 outings, Speed has averaged a team-high 18.4 points per game to go with 4.4 rebounds and a team-best 3.1 assists. He has shot 45.8 percent from the field, making 40.8 percent (31 of 76) from 3-point range. Overall this year, he is also first on the team in total rebounds (100) and assists (74).
  • Speed has scored 20 or more in four-straight games (at Lehigh, Bucknell, American, at Navy). He is the first Loyola player to do so since Deon Perry did in January-February 2024.

Speed In The League

  • Braeden Speed is the Greyhounds' leading scorer in Patriot League games, averaging 19.3 over nine contests. Getting to the line has been a big part of helping those scoring numbers. He leads the conference in free throws made (61) and is first in free throws attempted (73) during conference games (.836).

Second Half Sparks

  • Through 23 games this year, the Greyhounds' offense has been better during the second half of games, averaging 40.0 points to 34.3 in the first half.
  • Loyola has shot .459 from the field after the break, compared with .411 in the first.
  • On an individual basis, Braeden Speed has been the Greyhounds player with the biggest jump in the second half. Speed has taken 20 more shots after halftime this season and is averaging 9.7 following the break to 5.8 in the first 20 minutes.

The Kids Are Alright

  • Loyola's freshmen trio of Emmett Adair, Carter Berg-McLean and Sebastien Emenalo have seen their combined playing time increase significantly during Patriot League games, and they have produced.
  • When in the lineup together on January 17 against Boston University for 8:05, Loyola outscored the Terriers by 12 points in what became a 17-point victory.
  • Emenalo had the highest individual plus-minus of a Loyola player against a Division I opponent this year in the Boston University game at plus-31. Berg-McLean was a plus-15 against Colgate and plus-14 versus the Terriers.
  • The three were a plus-7 together against Lehigh despite a seven-point loss.
  • Since December 31 when Patriot League play started, Berg-McLean has averaged 19.8 minutes compared to 6.9 in non-conference games. Emenalo jumped to 17.1 from 11.4.

Adair Up There

  • Emmett Adair had the best game of his young career against Coppin State making 11 of 17 shots from the field, 3 of 6 from 3-point range, en route to scoring 29 points. He was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week after that game and a 10-point, 7-rebound performance against Washington College.
  • Adair had the second 20-plus point game of the season on December 9 at VMI, making 10 of 18 from the field to finish with 21 points.
  • He nearly matched his career-high on January 31 at Navy, making 6 of 11 from 3-point range en route to scoring a team-best 28 points. He also grabbed seven offensive rebounds in the game.
  • Adair missed the first five games of Loyola's season with an illness, but he's been a key contributor since making his debut November 19 at Duquesne. The Sydney, Australia, native has averaged 12.3 points, a team-high 4.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists in his 18 games played while averaging just 22.6 minutes.
  • Adair, who played for the Australian Senior National Team this summer as it went 6-0 to qualify for in FIBA Asia Cup qualifying, has shot 46.5 percent from the field in those games, 58.7 percent from 2-point range.

Rare Rebounds

  • Emmett Adair finished the January 31 game at Navy with seven rebounds, all of which came on the offensive glass. He is the first Loyola or Patriot League player to have seven or more offensive boards and no defensive rebounds since at least 2004-05 (per Stathead). He is one of five NCAA Division I players to have those marks this season.

Community Affair

On The Offensive Glass

  • Loyola is second in the Patriot League in offensive rebounds per game, averaging 11.2 through 23 outings.
  • Emmett Adair has played in 18 games thus far, but he is second in the conference with 48 pulls off the offensive glass. He recently started to qualify for the league stats (minimum 75 percent of team's games played), and is second with 2.7 per game.
  • The Greyhounds held American to just two offensive rebounds on January 28, the fewest by a Loyola opponent since limiting Holy Cross to two in January 2024. It was the 19th time the Greyhounds have held a Patriot League opponent to three or fewer offensive boards since joining the conference in 2013-14.

Helping Trains Run On Time

  • Tyson Commander's stats do not pop off the sheet as he's averaging a modest 3.5 points and 2.3 rebounds per game this season, but his contributions to Loyola's efficiency come on the court.
  • The senior has started the last eight games for Loyola, contests in which the Greyhounds' KenPom offensive efficiency is 108.3, more than four points higher than its season average of 104.2. Loyola's defensive number is 107.3, 12 points less than the season average of 119.3.
  • Commander has shot 60.0 percent from 3-point range as a starter and averages 5.1 points and 2.9 boards.

Theodosiou's Last Fifteen

  • Jacob Theodosiou put together the best pair of games, statistically, in a three-game stretch against Stonehill, Fairfield and Duquesne, averaging 23.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 3.3 steals, but his numbers have also been robust over the last 14. He has scored 20 or more six times during a run in which he is averaging a team-best 16.5 points per game.
  • The junior guard scored 21 on November 15 against Stonehill before posting 27 the next day versus host Fairfield. He was named Patriot League Player of the Week following those games before scoring 21 against Duquesne on November 19.
  • The three games represent the first time in his career that he's scored 20 or more in three-straight games and the first time a Loyola player has done so since Deon Perry did in January 2024.
  • Over the last 15 games he has played, Theodosiou has averaged 15.8 points, 3.9 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 2.1 steals.

Presence Felt

  • Carter Berg-McLean's role has increased since the start of League play with the guard from New Zealand averaging 19.8 minutes in 10 conference games after seeing 6.9 minutes in 11 non-conference appearances.
  • Berg-McLean's presence has not solely been reflected in the box score, but can be seen in the Greyhounds' plus-minus when he has been on the floor. He was a plus-15 against Colgate (Loyola scored 15 more points than the Raiders during his 15 minutes of action). He is second on the team with 27 assists in conference games with four coming against Colgate and a to-date career-high seven at Lehigh.

At The Next Level

  • As a school of less than 4,000 undergraduate students, Loyola University Maryland boasted three former student-athletes on NBA rosters as players last month on opening night. Two members of the men's basketball incoming class of 2019, Santi Aldama (SAHN-tee ALL-dah-muh) and Cam Spencer are on the Memphis Grizzlies' roster, and four-time men's lacrosse All-American Pat Spencer is a member of the Golden State Warriors.
  • Aldama was a first-round draft pick in the 2021 NBA Draft after leading the Patriot League in scoring and rebounding in 2020-21, and Cam Spencer led the conference in scoring the following season. He has played in 276 NBA games through January 17 and is averaging 14.0 points and 6.7 rebounds in 42 outings this season after signing a four-year contract during the summer. He has starred for his native Spain, earning TISSOT Most Outstanding Player honors at the 2024 Olympic Qualifying Tournament before averaging 17.7 points and 9.3 rebounds in three games during the Olympics.
  • Cam Spencer, who was a three-year starter for the Greyhounds from 2019-22, and won an NCAA Championship at Connecticut in 2023-24, made his NBA debut on November 20, 2024 for the Grizzlies and is averaging 11.7 points and 5.6 assists in 47 games this season.
  • Pat Spencer holds the Loyola men's lacrosse records for career assists and points and was the 2019 NCAA Division I Player of the Year for the Greyhounds. He switched to basketball after graduating from Loyola and has seen action in 79 games over the last three years for Golden State. This year, he's averaging 5.1 points and 2.9 assists in 34 outings.

Up Next

  • Loyola heads to Boston University on Saturday, February 7, to play the Terriers.
