Quick Hits

  • The Loyola University Maryland men's basketball heads on the road for its next two games, beginning with a Saturday, February 7, contest at Boston University. The game is slated to start at 1 p.m.
  • The game starts the first two-game swing for the Greyhounds since January 7-10; they have played six of eight at home since then.
  • The Terriers are the fourth team Loyola will play twice in Patriot League round-robin.
  • Josh Loeffler is in his second year as the Greyhounds' head coach after taking the position as Loyola's 22nd all-time head coach in March 2024. Last year, he led the Greyhounds to a five-win improvement over the 2023-24 season.
  • Loyola returns nine players to its roster from a year ago and features three seniors, four juniors, four sophomores and four freshmen.

Series History

  • Loyola and Boston University will meet for the 30th time in series history, and the 27th time since both teams joined the Patriot League for the 2013-14 season. The Terriers hold a 20-9 lead in the previous games after winning seven of the last nine meetings. The teams won on their own home courts last year and split the regular-season series.
  • Loyola won this season's first meeting on January 17 in Baltimore, taking a 74-57 decision. The Greyhounds held Boston University scoreless for six minutes, 22 seconds late in the second half, going on a 15-0 run to turn a one-point lead into the 17-point win.
  • Emmett Adair led Loyola with 17 points, Braeden Speed had 14 and Jonas Sirtautas added 12 in the win for the Greyhounds.
  • Loyola shot 51.9 percent in the second half while holding the Terriers to 26.9 percent overall and 21.4 percent from 3-point range.
  • Ben Defty had a traditional 3-point play with 8:10 left in regulation, trimming Loyola lead to a point, 56-55. It was the last basket the Terriers would have for over six minutes, however.
  • Prior to the game three weeks ago, the last five games between the two schools, dating to February 4, 2023, had been settled by a combined 10 points.

Watch The Action

  • Saturday's game will stream live on ESPN+.
  • All Loyola home games this season will also stream live on ESPN+ and be available internationally on Sidearm.

Last Time Out

  • Loyola University Maryland men's basketball had four steals in the final 2:36 of the second overtime period on Wednesday night, leading to six points to help the Greyhounds top Lehigh University, 89-84, in Reitz Arena.
  • Jordan Stiemke had two of the steals–including one on the final inbound pass of the game to run out the final two seconds–Troy Cicero Jr. came up with one, and Tyson Commander had the fourth.
  • Stiemke's pick-pocket on Lehigh's Nasir Whitlock with 2:32 on the clock led to a Carter Berg-McLean transition layup to put Loyola in front, 79-78.
  • Hank Alvey, who had a Lehigh-high 27 points, was fouled and made one of two free throws with 2:11 left, and he then converted in the paint 37 seconds later to give the Mountain Hawks a two-point lead, 81-79. Emmett Adair, who led Loyola with his 27 points and 11 rebounds for the first double-double of his career and second-straight game with 27 or more points, converted over Alvey in the paint to tie the game for the 13th time.
  • Cicero then intercepted a Whitlock pass and went to the rim in transition to put Loyola back in front, 83-81.
  • Next, it was Commander's turn to come up with a steal with 25 ticks left on the clock. He was fouled and made both free throws in a 1-and-1 situation to push the lead to four.
  • Joshua Ingram slipped a pass to Alvey in the paint for a dunk with 14 seconds left, cutting Loyola's lead to a pair, 85-83, and Cicero was fouled on the ensuing in-bounds pass.
  • Cicero had gone to the free-throw line just 14 times this season, but he made both ends of the 1-and-1, extending the lead back to four.
  • He finished with a career-high 17 points and three steals.
  • Loyola fouled Edouard Benoit with less than two seconds left, and he made the front-end of two. He attempted to miss the second on person with the margin at three, but Adair came up with the defensive rebound, drew a foul and made both shots.
  • Stiemke then stole the inbounds pass at midcourt to seal the win.

Back To Speed

  • Braeden Speed leads the team in scoring at 15.5 points per game, a mark that is up almost four points since the start of December over Loyola's last 14 games. He has led the Greyhounds in scoring in eight of the last 12 games, including seven of 11 conference outings.
  • The sophomore guard from Arizona had a stretch of five-straight games with 11 points or more (Nov. 6-19) snapped when he finished with five at then-No. 12 Kentucky, a game that started a three-game stretch where he totaled just 20 (six in limited action versus Washington College and nine against Coppin State).
  • Since then, Speed has scored in double figures in 15-straight outings with six 20-plus games and nine with 15 or more mixed in. He dropped his first 30-point game of his career on January 28 with 30 in a win over American.
  • He had his first collegiate double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds against Colgate. The game against the Raiders was the third 20-plus point game of Speed's collegiate career, joining his November 15 game against Stonehill when he had 21 and the December 21 contest at George Mason.
  • During the last 14 outings, Speed has averaged a team-high 18.1 points per game to go with 4.5 rebounds and a team-best 3.1 assists. He has shot 45.6 percent from the field, making 41.8 percent (33 of 79) from 3-point range. Overall this year, he is also first on the team in total rebounds (105) and assists (76).
  • Speed scored 20 or more in four-straight recent games (at Lehigh, Bucknell, American, at Navy). He was the first Loyola player to do so since Deon Perry did in January-February 2024.

Speed In The League

  • Braeden Speed is the Greyhounds' leading scorer in Patriot League games, averaging 18.7 over 11 contests. Getting to the line has been a big part of helping those scoring numbers. He leads the conference in free throws made (62) and is first in free throws attempted (75) during conference games (.827).

Second Half Sparks

  • Through 24 games this year, the Greyhounds' offense has been better during the second half of games, averaging 39.7 points to 34.3 in the first half.
  • Loyola has shot .454 from the field after the break, compared with .413 in the first.
  • On an individual basis, Braeden Speed has been the Greyhounds player with the biggest jump in the second half. Speed has taken 23 more shots after halftime this season and is averaging 9.5 following the break to 5.9 in the first 20 minutes.

Adair Up There

  • Emmett Adair had the best game of his young career against Coppin State making 11 of 17 shots from the field, 3 of 6 from 3-point range, en route to scoring 29 points. He was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week after that game and a 10-point, 7-rebound performance against Washington College.
  • Adair had the second 20-plus point game of the season on December 9 at VMI, making 10 of 18 from the field to finish with 21 points.
  • He nearly matched his career-high on January 31 at Navy, making 6 of 11 from 3-point range en route to scoring a team-best 28 points. He also grabbed seven offensive rebounds in the game.
  • The very next game – February 4 in a double-overtime home win against Lehigh – Adair compiled his first collegiate double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Adair missed the first five games of Loyola's season with an illness, but he's been a key contributor since making his debut November 19 at Duquesne. The Sydney, Australia, native has averaged 13.1 points, a team-high 5.2 rebounds and 1.1 assists in his 19 games played while averaging just 23.3 minutes.
  • Adair, who played for the Australian Senior National Team this summer as it went 6-0 to qualify for in FIBA Asia Cup qualifying, has shot 46.8 percent from the field in those games, 59.0 percent from 2-point range.

Freshman First

  • Emmett Adair is the first Loyola freshman in the Greyhounds' Patriot League-era (since 2013-14) to score 25 or more points in back-to-back games after doing so at Navy (28) and Lehigh (27).
  • Adair's three total games of 25 or more match Deon Perry's three in 2022-23 for most by a freshman during that span.

The Kids Are Alright

  • Loyola's freshmen trio of Emmett Adair, Carter Berg-McLean and Sebastien Emenalo have seen their combined playing time increase significantly during Patriot League games, and they have produced.
  • When in the lineup together on January 17 against Boston University for 8:05, Loyola outscored the Terriers by 12 points in what became a 17-point victory.
  • Emenalo had the highest individual plus-minus of a Loyola player against a Division I opponent this year in the Boston University game at plus-31. Berg-McLean was a plus-15 against Colgate and plus-14 versus the Terriers.
  • The three were a plus-7 together against Lehigh despite a seven-point loss.
  • Since December 31 when Patriot League play started, Berg-McLean has averaged 19.8 minutes compared to 6.9 in non-conference games. Emenalo jumped to 17.1 from 11.4.

Rare Rebounds

  • Emmett Adair finished the January 31 game at Navy with seven rebounds, all of which came on the offensive glass. He is the first Loyola or Patriot League player to have seven or more offensive boards and no defensive rebounds since at least 2004-05 (per Stathead). He is one of five NCAA Division I players to have those marks this season.

Community Affair

On The Offensive Glass

  • Loyola is second in the Patriot League in offensive rebounds per game, averaging 11.3 through 24 outings.
  • Emmett Adair has played in 19 games thus far, but he is tied for second in the conference with 52 pulls off the offensive glass. He recently started to qualify for the league stats (minimum 75 percent of team's games played), and is also second with 2.7 per game.
  • The Greyhounds held American to just two offensive rebounds on January 28, the fewest by a Loyola opponent since limiting Holy Cross to two in January 2024. It was the 19th time the Greyhounds have held a Patriot League opponent to three or fewer offensive boards since joining the conference in 2013-14.

Helping Trains Run On Time

  • Tyson Commander's stats do not pop off the sheet as he's averaging a modest 3.5 points and 2.3 rebounds per game this season, but his contributions to Loyola's efficiency come on the court.
  • The senior has started the last nine games for Loyola, contests in which the Greyhounds' KenPom offensive efficiency is 108.6, more than four points higher than its season average of 104.0. Loyola's defensive number is 107.0, 11+ points less than the season average of 118.8.
  • Commander has shot 60.0 percent from 3-point range as a starter and averages 5.1 points and 2.9 boards.

Presence Felt

  • Carter Berg-McLean's role has increased since the start of League play with the guard from New Zealand averaging 21.0 minutes in 11 conference games after seeing 6.9 minutes in 11 non-conference appearances.
  • Berg-McLean's presence has not solely been reflected in the box score, but can be seen in the Greyhounds' plus-minus when he has been on the floor. He was a plus-15 against Colgate (Loyola scored 15 more points than the Raiders during his 15 minutes of action). He is second on the team with 31 assists in conference games with four coming against Colgate and a to-date career-high seven at Lehigh.

At The Next Level

  • As a school of less than 4,000 undergraduate students, Loyola University Maryland boasted three former student-athletes on NBA rosters as players last month on opening night. Two members of the men's basketball incoming class of 2019, Santi Aldama (SAHN-tee ALL-dah-muh) and Cam Spencer are on the Memphis Grizzlies' roster, and four-time men's lacrosse All-American Pat Spencer is a member of the Golden State Warriors.
  • Aldama was a first-round draft pick in the 2021 NBA Draft after leading the Patriot League in scoring and rebounding in 2020-21, and Cam Spencer led the conference in scoring the following season. He has played in 276 NBA games through January 17 and is averaging 14.0 points and 6.7 rebounds in 43 outings this season after signing a four-year contract during the summer. He has starred for his native Spain, earning TISSOT Most Outstanding Player honors at the 2024 Olympic Qualifying Tournament before averaging 17.7 points and 9.3 rebounds in three games during the Olympics.
  • Cam Spencer, who was a three-year starter for the Greyhounds from 2019-22, and won an NCAA Championship at Connecticut in 2023-24, made his NBA debut on November 20, 2024 for the Grizzlies and is averaging 11.9 points and 5.6 assists in 48 games this season.
  • Pat Spencer holds the Loyola men's lacrosse records for career assists and points and was the 2019 NCAA Division I Player of the Year for the Greyhounds. He switched to basketball after graduating from Loyola and has seen action in 79 games over the last three years for Golden State. This year, he's averaging 5.8 points and 2.9 assists in 36 outings.

Up Next

  • Loyola heads to Easton, Pennsylvania, for a Wednesday, February 11, game at Lafayette College.
