BALTIMORE – Lehigh University used a 9-1 run to close Saturday's Patriot League game against at Loyola University Maryland to turn a one-time five-goal deficit into a 15-10 victory at Ridley Athletic Complex.
The host Greyhounds (4-3 overall, 1-1 Patriot League) built an 8-3 lead midway through the second quarter, but Lehigh started its run with a goal 64 seconds before the half that made it 9-6 in Loyola's favor at halftime.
The Mountain Hawks scored the third quarter's first three goals with Andrew Kelly's tally at 10:26 tying the game at 9-9.
Loyola regained the lead less than four minutes later when
Chase Gregory made a transition run and threw to
Matthew Minicus for a goal at 5:13, but Lehigh did not give up another goal for the rest of the game.
Finn Morgan picked up a loose ball off a missed Lehigh shot on top of the crease and scored with the shot clock under three at 3:41, tying the game at 10-10, and Colin French's unassisted goal at 2:46 put Lehigh (3-4, 1-2) in front.
The Mountain Hawks would go on to score all four of the fourth quarter's goals for the final difference.
Kenan Everhart led Loyola with four points on three goals and an assist, while
Matthew Minicus and
Mason Cook each had two and one.
Loyola won 19 of 29 faceoffs in the game with
Carson Hall going 10 of 17 and
Mason Graves a career-best 9 of 12 with five ground balls.
Miles Halter had six ground balls on the wings.
Loyola jumped out to a 6-3 lead at the end of the first quarter thanks to a 19-5 advantage in shots, and the Greyhounds held a 31-12 lead in shots at halftime. Lehigh, however, outshot Loyola, 18-7, in the third quarter and 26-15 in the second half.
The Greyhounds will be back on the field Tuesday, March 17, when they host Georgetown University in a 6 p.m. game at Ridley Athletic Complex.
