BETHLEHEM, Pa. –
Matthew Simpson was named the Patriot League Men's Golf Player of the Week on Wednesday, two days after making his college debut for Loyola University Maryland at the Maryland Individual Invitational.
Simpson birdied his last hole at the University of Maryland Golf Course during the final round to take a solo second-place finish at 3-under 139. He shot rounds of 69-70 on the par-71 setup.
The Toronto, Ontario, native started the day with a bogey five on the course's second hole, but he got back to even with a birdie on the sixth. Two holes later, he moved into red numbers with back-to-back birdies on eight and nine, and he would remain at even- or under-par for the rest of the tournament.
Simpson was even overall through 26 holes, but he again birdied the ninth, and he played a bogey-free, 2-under par back-nine to close the 36-hole tournament, birding his final hole of the day to take second place.
