Fairfield Outlasts Loyola For Five-Game Win

Oct. 7, 2007

Box Score

BALTIMORE - Fairfield University won the final two games of Sunday afternoon's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match at Reitz Arena, 26-30, 30-27, 26-30, 30-23, 15-12, over Loyola College.

The Stags (11-9 overall, 8-1 MAAC) improved their hitting attack in the fourth game, hitting .302 with 17 kills and only four errors in the fourth frame after hitting .140, .214, and .062, respectively, in the first three games.

Fairfield jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the fifth game and led 8-4 before Loyola took a time out. The Greyhounds slowly chipped away and scored seven of the next 10 points to tie the score at 11-11 on a Stags attack error.

Fairfield, however, put together back-to-back kills from Kayla Hughes and Katie Mann to go ahead 13-11, and then a Loyola attack error gave the Stags match point. After a Mann attack error, Lindsey Lee put away the last of her 16 kills to seal the match.

The score was a vast improvement for Loyola from the first time the teams met in 2007. Fairfield posted a 30-18, 30-18, 30-25, victory on September 29 in Connecticut.

Loyola (14-9, 5-3) tied the score at 7-7 in the first game on a Nina Camaioni kill, giving Chrissey Cruz the serve for the Greyhounds. She reeled off five-straight points to put Loyola up, 12-7.

Fairfield tied the game at 17-17, but Loyola would go ahead by three, 26-23, on a Karlie Urbaniek hitting error. Fairfield attack errors on the final two points gave the Greyhounds a 30-26 win.

The Stags led most of the first game, but Loyola rallied to take a 22-21 lead on a Kelly Oliver attack error. Fairfield then tied the score oat 26-26 on a Lee kill and scored four of the last five points in the game.

Loyola rallied from an early third-game deficit to go up by five, 25-20, on a Rachel Schillinger-Chrissey Cruz block of Lee, propelling them to a two-games-to-one lead in the match.

The Greyhounds then fell behind early in the third game and never recovered, as the Stags had their best hitting game of the match.

Anastasia Collins led the Greyhounds with a career-high 16 kills, while Camaioni had 14 and 30 digs. Karlee Woodward, Christina Greenup and Schillinger all posted nine kills.

Mann had nine kills in the final two games and led all palyers with 19 in the match. Lee finished with 16, and Urbaniak had 15.

The Greyhounds continue home MAAC action on Saturday, October 13, with a 2 p.m. match against Rider University.
